I use them to mark my golf balls, particularly the retractable version, they are great for that, but I was actually looking for a software programme that enables my printer to print directly onto DVDs

So, do you have your answer yet? Several viable suggestions have been made in this thread, none of which include a 'Sharpie'.
On the other hand you will need a 3D printer if you wish to print your own golf balls!
