I didn't look back in the thread but did he actually get what he ordered? No grey market etc.

It really comes down to "let the buyer beware" as usual. I hear all of this stuff about 42nd, but that has not been my experience. I have bought from them with no problem of any kind, maybe luck has something to do with it.

I will make this as short as possible. On December 23 at about 4:30 P.M. CST, I had the urge to order about $4000 in camera stuff from 42nd Street Photo. I did this through Ralph by telephone. About forty minutes later, after having a changed of mind, I called and left a message that I wanted to cancel. Apparently 42nd Street had closed.

I normally order from Adorama or B & H, but both were closed for religious observances on Friday, December 23. Time was a factor, because of a European trip scheduled for early January, so I resorted to 42nd Street.

On Saturday, December 24, I called 42nd Street in the morning and told Walter that I had left a message the day before that I wanted to cancel. He told me the order had already gone out, so I just needed to receive the shipment and then call back for instructions on how to cancel, and there would be no problem. I told Walter I would do that.

This shipment arrived today at about noon, Mississippi time. I promptly called 42nd Street and spoke to Walter about returning the merchandise. He told me that there would be a 20% restocking charge. Based on the order, that would be about $800. I told told him that I had barely touched the merchandise, but he insisted that the charge would apply.

I told Walter I was unaware of the 20% restocking charge. He specifically told me that, "We never tell our customers about the restocking charge." I asked Walter why customers were never told this. Walter said, "Because it is on or website." I told sweet Walter that I ordered by telephone, not by website. Walter said that there was nothing he could do about this.

To his credit, however, Walter put me on hold and came back to tell me that he had authority to reduce the re-stocking fee to 15% (or about $600).

Ok, I am familiar with the narrow profit margins for sellers of cameras. If I keep the merchandise, there is a modest profit for the seller. If I return the merchandise, there is a 15% payment for "restocking" but the seller still has possession of the merchandise. Basically, 42nd would receive a $600 payment for receiving a package, the contents of which have not been disturbed. Nice profit for no sale.

I have chosen to keep the merchandise. Fortunately, I can afford to pay. But that is not the point.

As a lawyer, I know that a deal is a deal, and I ordered the merchandise. The seller has no obligation to take it back. That is all well and good. But my problem is with Walter's saying that his company never tells the customer about the 20 percent restocking fee. They really don't have too, but I can assure those reading this that I will never--I mean never--order again form 42nd Street. You guys can do what you want. Just beware.

We live and learn. I will stick with B&H and Adorama in the future. The "boys" at 42nd Street can do whatever the heck they want. I will rejoice knowing that I never have to deal with Walter, Ralph or any of those 42nd Street guys again for the rest of my life. I hope they have a conscience, but I really don't know, especially after Walter saw fit to interrogate me about why I wanted to cancel my order. I don't cuss, but if I did, I would know exactly what to say to this guy.

Ok, it is bedtime in Mississippi. Good night to all of you Hogs reading this.
I will make this as short as possible. On December... (show quote)

Bill, you have now added the 100th sad tale about 42nd St. This is a known bad vendor. There are very many negative comments here on the Hog, including my own tale--not as costly as yours, but a testimony to there bad behavior.

Sorry about the difficulty and loss of restocking fee. Just call your credit card company, outline the specifics of the sale, indicate how unscrupulous 42nd St. Photo's practices are - easily documented, and DISPUTE THE PURCHASE. They should be able to help you. As others have previously mentioned, 42nd St. Photo is bad news!!! Surprised you had not known about that.
Good luck.

You might also wish to add Cameta Camera to your list of retailers (along with B&H and Adorama). Anything you order from us has a 30 day return period and we do not charge a restocking fee. We would appreciate the opportunity to provide you with excellent service. Ed

Friends DO NOT let friends buy from those venomous snakes. They are evil, deceptive bastards. Hundreds, if not thousands, can tell similar stories of woe!

Adorama, B&H, Cameta, and KEH (used gear) are all very reliable. I've used them all without incident.

Just curious....if you already had the stuff, and it was what you wanted, and you say you could afford it, why did you want to return all of it..? The price was right or you wouldn't have ordered it. I deal with many places, ebay, Adorama, B&H, Freestyle, Film Photography Project, Lomography Store, and have never had a problem. I remember 42nd St. in the back of photo mags back in the 60's when I was 14. Never bought from them, though. I've heard some stories over the years..... Nyms

That was 47th St. Photo that advertised in Pop Photo, Mod Photo, Petersen's Photo... I bought several items from them back in the '70s. 42nd St. plays on memories of their good name!

My experience with Cameta is good also, no complaints whatsoever. I must admit though, I probably place way less many orders for equipment than many on UHH do.

And what is amazing, 42nd Street Photo must know of this forum bashing them. And they are still in business. Local government obviously finds them to be OK, despite constant complaints. Shame on them too. They should be issuing citations to them for poor customer service. I also heard they prey on foreign visitors, who have no idea of their business practices. 42nd Street Photo just doesn't care what anyone says about them. Business as usual, I guess.

To William and ALL hoggers: One of the purposes of this blog is to inform the members of good and bad companies...........I urge ALL potential buyers to first ask questions from the members of this blog BEFORE you make a purchase. I think William would have thought twice before ordering anything from 42nd Street.

Ordering 4K worth of merchandise from 42st photo is like buying a parachute or scuba gear at a flea market

Good combination. The failed parachute would then require use of scuba gear, hopefully in better condition than the parachute.

Did paperwork state 20% Restocking ? Of course that was a little late.
Would credit card company offer any support ?

Buyer Beware are subtle, powerful words, especially in court.

Few years ago I made a purchase from one a store in New York. It turned out to be a bait and switch store. I had to pay more than what they advertsed. I paid but then I complained to AG office in NY. After receiving several complains they along with police department closed down more than 60 stores involved in similar business. Refunded me the extra money I paid for product.

Just be happy it wasn't Beach Camera. They send out broken stuff with missing parts and claim you broke it and didn't t return all the "shipped" items. They will try to jerk you around for 90 days with promises in order for the time to expire with your credit card company so even they will not reverse the charges.

I Remember those Bastards... I Bought a 28mm Wide Angle Lens from them back around the Fall off 87, & it was a Joke!!!

It was for my Pentax A3000 which was also a Joke, but the Lens did not give Sharp Images! & it took Nearly 2 Months to Deliver, I Ordered it on October 29th 1987, Damn Package didn't arrive till December 20th of 87, 4 Days before Christmas!

I Called those Beach idiots Several Times & got the Runaround Saying they didn't get My Postal Money Order, & another F**kng Excuse that they got it but they were backed up in other Orders Cause of Some Computer Snag, Just Plain Bull S**t to me!

They opened a store in East Meadow on Long Island. It was about a mile from where I lived. Unfortunately the local clientele couldn't wrap there heads around a store not being open on Saturday. They were gone in the blink of an eye.
