I am sorry if this offends but this complaint is the most trivial, meaningless, pathetic (I am desperately trying not to call it stupid and just failed) I have ever heard in my life. I just came home from the doctor after hearing I may have CANCER to find someone complaining about capitalization. of all the ludicrous insignificant, trivial concerns. If this is your biggest problem in life you nneed to be on your knees thanking God for being so blessed. I have complaints to but i save them for the big stuff like, being unemployed for a year and a half, or how my food stamps were cut in half for michelle obamas childhood obesity program. How about the state of the economy, the growing immorality in society, or even the fact that woman say they want nice guys but really want bad boys    If you want to complain, blame public education for doing everything but teaching proper spelling typing and puncuation. in a perfect world everyone would type correctly, use the proper quenns english, and have perfect spelling. But it isn't that perfect world. If it was I would be to busy dating supermodels to notice.

how does the lack of capitalization of letters make it harder to read a sentence, or even a paragraph?
that's what punctuation is for.
Because the proper single space between a sentence-ending period, and the initial opening letter of the next word at the beginning of a sentence is often not enough visual separation. It's why we went to initial caps in the first place. Not using them is simply a question of laziness. Unless you're e.e.cummings, in which case you're excused.

I've resisted suggesting grammar and usage corrections on this site since Day 1, because many people get offended if you correct them. This, I believe, is an offshoot of the somewhat recent teaching guideline in many public schools of "every child is a genius", and to de-emphasize correct spelling and grammar in favor of maintaining self-esteem and 'creativity'.

Yes, language is an evolving craft. Yes, new words come into usage every day. Yes, most people are familiar with and comfortable decoding "ROFL" and "LOL" and such. But as the original poster noted, composing long-form posts and replies in a forum such as this is not the same as texting on an iPhone screen or tweeting 41 characters or less.

Clarity is always useful. I've seen people get very offended at a post in reply to one of theirs, because the reply misinterpreted the original due to unclear grammar and misspelling.

And if you think capitalization doesn't matter, I offer an illustrative example:

I helped my uncle Jack off a horse.
quote=zaroba how does the lack of capitalization ... (show quote)

That's just wrong. Is that acceptable where you live. I'm sure it's illegal here.

The same university research paper indicated that if students choose to submit their assigned work with uncorrected spelling mistakes, poor punctuation and no capitalization... they may forfeit their diploma.

So, we invite you to straighten your hat, pull up your pants and join the other adults using this forum.

Understood. I'ze just goofing. Native language would be English, though. Thanks! :)

Should know is right. But like many things on the internet, a sort of poetic license (if you will, but I'm guesing you won't) is assumed. People are typing instead of talking, so a quicker way to do that is to use less puncuation and caps (like texting). Not that I do this (I even double check spell check because it's 90% useless if your wrong word is spelled right) but I have come to recognize this having done the internet thing as long as it's been available. I've grown with it and seen the way people talk (type) and have come to accept it. If it's too distracting to read, I let it go. If curious I might ask someone to explain the gibberish they typed. No offense to your quest. Everyone has the right to their say, however they say it.

Sorry about your health but we all know you wouldn't date super models they are usualy scantily clad. It may be just an idea that one person wanted to discuss that's why it falls under general chit chat. Chit chat doesn't sound to me like a deep conversation or the theory of relativity, just throwing around ideas. Like anything else if it's not your topic just move on and don't waste your time. There must be 80 other topics of the day.

It's just rude to expect readers to constantly try to decipher what you are writing when some of you constantly start each new sentence or paragraph with lower case letters. Please find the shift key and use it on occasion to help others read your entries. This is not texting it's suppose to be writing for clarity.

Thank You

I have to agree with ShakyShutter on this. I've taught GED classes for 11 years. I've seen the demise of penmanship, and I fear grammar is the next to go. Nobody expects college-level writing, just a small effort at proper English. The way we write says as much about us as the photos we take.

English is the only language I know.

I can easily type using capital letters if I choose to, it has no effect on how fast I can type. But the thing is, I choose not to. Why? Simply put, it makes me feel that my posts are calmer, just plain text lacking of any emotion. It tends to match how I am in real life: calm, boring, and not very emotional. Emotion is something that is often very difficult to express with text and it's easily misinterpreted which can lead to arguments. Thus, typing in a calm manner also makes me feel that I am getting a point across without any chance of triggering an emotion based response by somebody reading it.

While some people may type poorly even if English is their native language, you must keep in mind that the internet is a global place and those that don't know English may not be able to type it correctly. Even with spell checkers, a computer without an English Language pack may not be capable of spell checking the English they are trying to type. While yes, you did basically say if English is your native language, are you really going to ask and record what the native language is of every single member of the forum to dictate whether or not it's acceptable for them to type incorrectly? In addition, if you really want to nit-pick, we could bring cultural differences into spelling and grammar. The United States isn't the only country that speaks English, so expecting residents of other English speaking countries to conform to the U.S. English standards isn't exactly proper. I have many times seen U.S. English speakers complain about the typography of European English speakers, and vice versa.

if my desire to type a certain way doesn't conform to somebodies standards of typography, then so be it, i'm not bothered by it. everybody has their own opinions about things and everybody has their methods of getting things done. everyone has a right to express those opinions and methods as long as they are within the rules of the location they are expressing them, be it online or in real life. ten years of running game servers, websites, and moderating forums has taught me to not worry about how somebody types. all that matters is that the person gets their point across.
