I'm not a "blame the media" guy, but, back in the day, so to speak, the media did work a lot differently. Three major networks and the local newspapers were the major news sources for most people. More news did not get reported then did. Now there are countless news outlets and they are all fighting tooth and nail for anything that will grab a viewer's attention. The more sensational the better. We are constantly bombarded with all manner of news stories. Much of it from rather dubious sources. Aside from terrorism and drug violence I doubt that the typical crime stats have changed greatly. I know from experience that many cities are safer now then they were 40-50 yrs ago. My biggest gripe is with the weather services. Every summer shower or winter snow squall is hyped up like it's the end of civilization just to get people to stay tuned for the ratings.

The legal issues become especially serious if ANYONE is making even one thin shekel, directly or indirectly, from the photos. See, e.g., LOUDER v. COMPUSERVE

The thing that gets me is they are completely unaccountable on the accuracy of their predictions. No one mentions all the times they are dead wrong. In any other walk of life your batting average gets measured one way or the other. Weather forecasters are exempt from any criticism on all their wrong forecasts.

I really seldom watch network TV - can't stand the commercials. Most of my news and weather is from the internet.

Wondering what the group thinks or does about posting pics of family kids or grandkids on the Web? Although I do post on Instagram I never post the grandkids since I have open account. If I shot pics of them I create Apple or Google share album for the family. I think some of them a very good phtographically but am concerned about the creepy factor out there.

I never post a picture of any of my children, grandchildren, or any relatives or friends.
Well, not completely true. I do maintain PRIVATE galleries on my SmugMug account. However, no one can access those galleries without a password and knowing the link.
That part of the account is strictly for family & friends.

No, I don't feel we should be posting pictures of minors where we have no control over who sees them! Personally, I do take a lot of pictures of grand/great grand kids and I use a smugmug account to distribute them to family members. The "folders" are password protected allowing family members, only, or those they specifically trust, to access them.

I don't know about publicly posting pictures for their artistic value, if they of are or include children. It's legally OK, but the families might object. As to the "creep factor", I really think that's overblown. But I would certainly not advise including any information identifying the children with such a posting.

Ya! Would you testify at the Russian hacking hearings? And that is exactly what Hillary said!

The world, and the internet, being what they are, if you post a photo of a kid there is always the chance of it ending up on a porn site if some creep spots it. Does it happen often? Probably not. Can it happen? Sure. Your call on how comfortable you are with the risk, however slight it might be. One thing to keep in mind: If you post any photos of family, friends, your home, pets, whatever, make sure the GPS function of your camera, if it has it, was off when you took the shot or that you deleted that data.

I only post a few favorites to Facebook for the families eyes only. Just to be safe, all metadata is stripped before posting. Never had a problem.

When I saw the heading "Posting Grandkids Pics" I expected to read that group members were sick of seeing such photos and wanted a ban on posting!

My friends and family proudly post photos from birth onwards through all the stages of growing up on Facebook and just enjoy them. Birthdays,Christmas,School events etc Maybe it is foolish that i have never given these issues a thought but no problems so far so hope this continues. I have been guilty of sharing on this site to which was why it attracted my attention!

Hi Trixy. I was told a few years back not to post pics of my grandkids on open internet sites, although Facebook is considered safe because only "friends" can see them. I think there is a paranoia here in the US about pedophiles and child pornographers, though I can't imagine what they would do with these normal pics of kids on holidays, birthdays, visits, etc. So I am deprived of sharing some really nice portraits and shots of the grandkids on my website or on forums such as UHH, just in case some crazy person might see them.

I agree absolutely. What a shame.
