Now there is an issue where Apple will not give you an upgrade to anything other than the latest release if you haven't had it before. So for example i can download yosemite on my account anytime i want but i can't download el kapitan because i never downloaded it before sierra was released. I can go to Sierra. Although I have no reason too other than to ensure its an option later on.

Apple can be quite painful at times, e.g they took ebooks and pdfs out of itunes to try and force you to use ibooks and more specifically to use icloud to sync and to stop you transferring ebooks and pdfs to "rival" platforms. Personally I keep ebooks and pdfs on a nas controlled by one machine and then i can check out anything i want on my other devices when i want too including my own personal content. So you can find by going with their latest release you can be following Apples interest and not your own.

Apple wants you to keep buying new which is why they are doing things like soldering in Batteries Ram and SSD's making them hard if not impossible to replace. They really can be such ... about things e.g upgrade the ram in a 27" imac you pop a cover and there are 4 slots (2 empty) so you can get up to 32gb of ram. 21.5" 2 ram slots allowing for 16 gb but first you must remove the screen and logic board to change those 2 Ram boards.

I like osx but i am starting to really dislike apple...

I am not defending Apple here; there is a lot about them to be mad about and yes they are beyond greedy. But you think Apple is bad, try microsoft; they will make you run back to Apple in a heart beat.

Bravo!

I've been an Apple person since 1979—the Apple II—but they've become greedy and insensitive to the needs of their long-time customers. Many of their operating system and hardware upgrades seem to be unneeded fluff to up-sell their user base.

For decades I was an Apple evangelist; probably converted at least a dozen people from Windows to Apple, but now I can't and won't do that.

Although I'm pretty fed up with Apple, I also dislike Windows so I've got nowhere to go.

LINUX? At one point, I thought that LINUX might be a viable alternative, but I don't hear much about it lately.

I've been nursing along a nine year-old iMac that's going to be made obsolete by those good folks from Cupertino.

Consider a used 2009 - 2012 used mac pro; they are very usable and still very capable of working on; a lot more than an imac ever was.

I upgraded to Sierra, and LR quits on me frequently, upgraded to latest version, better, but still quits. I would not upgrade yet, I am sorry that I did.

I have Sierra running on a 13" 2012 MacBook Air, a 2012 13" MacBook Pro Retina, and a 27" iMac Retina. No installation problems and no problems with Lightroom, Photoshop, DxO Optics Pro, Capture One or any other photo or non-photo applications.

It is much more important to install Mac software upgrades for their security upgrades than for any new features they may provide.

True it is generally good practice to install security upgrades. The last one i installed yesterday was 2016-007 on yosemite.

this is the previous security update

About the security content of macOS Sierra 10.12.1, Security Update 2016-002 El Capitan, and Security Update 2016-006 Yosemite. It is the same update for Yosemite El Capitan and Sierra. If you are running Mavericks, then the most recent security update was released September 1st 2016.

The last one for mountain lion was 13th august 2015.

You do not need to update to sierra for security updates just yet, Yosemite might lose support in 2019 but till then you have a choice in which version of osx you choose to run and be secure.

So true, unfortunately. I do like osx when they are not trying to extract money from me, and I pick and choose what I want to use and what I don't.
Yesterday they released itunes 12.5.4 which tried again to take my ebooks and pdfs away from my control. I am working up a new article on banishing ibooks to the trash again. I defeated them again :).

The apple book store is only focused on using iphones and ipads, while there are ereaders of several alternatives, I like the epaper display so you can read outside and the use of android tablets and phones as well as pc's and mac's and the main book store which addresses the whole of the market is really amazon who has versions of the kindle app for most platforms. Apple only want's me to use iphones ipads and Macs but i've found that you can work round the road blocks they have built.

My central repository is my nas several terabytes of network storage that gets backed up. If I need anything it is there that i intend to find it, not any of my many other systems. The sharing features in itunes is pretty decent, i can import to a local library on my other machines if I need something outside my Lan. Or there are various online storage facilities I use as well. On the Lan the nas library for itunes is available to all my machines capable of running and accessing itunes. It also feeds my apple tv. I also have an android tv box i use as well. My main monitor is hooked up to my hack pro, my appletv and android tv by hdmi with a breakout on the hdmi input to feed my surround amp. It's a shame the apple tv is limited in what it can do.

But the Android Tv box is quite good at what it does:)

My current interest is idocument 2 lite, which is in the app store, there is a full version but i'm not ready to buy into that until i'm sure it can do what i want which is manage a central repository of documents, again on my nas.

One thing which generally hasn't improved much since windows 3.11 is the management and organisation of personal data , spread sheets, doc files , pages files, ect. we still tend to be left to our own devices when it comes to filing them away. With idocuments i think it will allow me an overview of documents and their relationships that can be accessed easily from the idocuments interface, similar to itunes.
current 'systems' are reliant on the human memory and some sort of folder hierarchy in order to retrieve them at a later date, again leaving us kinda stuck if we are on the wrong computer.

At least with email i generally use gmail so it doesn't matter what computer i am using i can access my email anywhere.

I recently found this sms backup+

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&hl=en

it's a handy little app that runs on android phones and its set to back up txt messages and phone call logs to my gmail account they come in with a label 'SMS' . I was prompted to add this recently. I had to do a factory reset on my phone and although my apps were able to be restored automatically, sms messages were not but will be now with this app. I keep messages for years I even have a few from my exwife from before we were married :), it wasn't all bad.

To be fair the technology is all well and good but it needs to be working with you rather than against you. Apple seems to be moving towards the against you model, but yes without doubt the windows alternative is worse. I like linux but honestly some of my most used programs are not available but on the plus side with macs is just about all i want from linux is there. I have a nice video conversion script based on the avconv library that lets me convert video's into an iTunes friendly format but for most i use a program called iSubtitle not so much for subtitling but it is great at looking up metadata and artwork, which works well with iTunes since iTunes files based on metadata.

Sorry ran on for quite a bit with this post but it may be of interest to other mac owners.

Oh and for an epub reader http://www.epubread.com/app/en/ this isn't bad.

I agree with you completely. I have been a long time hater of the soak you for everything you got program called itunes. Apple screwed the pooch when they got of rid of Steve Jobs and it looks like they are going to do it again with his passing. It really started before he passed but it has been those running the company and not on Steve. They had already half destroyed ilife with the inception of 10.10, so I keep a copy of 10.9 and the good ilfe. Yes, I do have the new version on 10.10, hoping some day they will fix it back or for when it is useful to use. You are so right where everything is catering to the ipone and ipads and the single youth who have their whole pay checks to pee over to Apple as they are sucking these kids dry. Wonder how many will not be able to get a decent education because they gave all their savings to Apple through itunes? For years now, those who have kept a close eye on Apple are secretly wondering if they will eventually abandon the computer division altogether. They lost all of the world's professional studios to Final Cut when they destroyed it back in 2011 or 2012. All the studios had standard orders for auto shipment of the new versions of Final Cut as soon as it is released; and when they received the new junk version, they all returned it demanding their money refunded. They have now all moved over mostly to Premier which prompted Adobe to do the subscription thing to boost their profits through the ceiling. They get away with this financial ripping off of their customers only because microsoft is so much worse. Almost seems they are in cahoots with each other to control and make the computing world as profitable as it is. It's all about money and the power and control it brings.

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro from OS 10.8 to El Capitan. After doing research about Sierra, several of my older software apps would not work. To get a copy of El Capitan OS, I bought one on Ebay for $12. This was sent to me on an 8gig flash drive. I inserted the flash drive and started the computer holding down the option key. Select the new OS and follow the directions on the screen. Everything went smoothly and took about an hour. Don't panic if it looks like it's not doing anything for the first half an hour. The computer runs like a brand new computer. All my software works as it should. The only problem that I had is that Canon doesn't make a print driver for my Pixma IP 4600 printer so I have to update my printer. I am really glad that I upgraded to El Capitan. This moved my OS four upgrades.

I'll take the upgrades of Apple over Microsoft any day. We are now going through the latest MS extortion and now have a growing box of incompatible monitors that worked perfectly until the latest required upgrade. Don't get me started....

Why does Mac have security upgrades? Do bad guys regularly hack them also these days?

I wonder how secure Linux is.

perhaps to stay ahead of the game? I've been hacked more on my PCs-- but given that is's only my experience it's not sufficient data...

I just installed the last one. It was some sort of weird combo of a Safari update, an iTunes update, and was labeled Security Update 2016-003.
So, there haven't been many. I still haven't installed the last operating system upgrade. I waiting for something... I guess a sign of some kind...

I upgraded to Sierra on my MacBook Pro, and haven't had any problems with it until I bought Adobe Elements 15 last week through B&H Photo. I couldn't install it after downloading! I tried and tried. I called B&H who sent an email giving me directions on how to do it. They also told me there were others with Sierra who had problems too.

Well, their directions wouldn't work, so called AppleCare, and the tech couldn't help me either. I was told to contact B&H again for better directions, but she said it looked like there was something in the software that was blocking it from installing. She also said that if all else fails, I could go to the Adobe website to download the trial version of Elements, then enter the product key and install it. That worked.

Mac's have security upgrades because Apple supplies security for their systems; microsoft does not.
