Dave, for the one or two shots worth taking Texas, you should be fine with an iPhone!!!

Not a fan of Texas, I'm guessing LOL. I can understand that.

Dave, I highly recommend the lens if you can get a good one, it is definitely a G lens in disguise.
Loads of images here
http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/topic11374.htmlThe lens was released with the first Minolta AF camera, the 7000i, back in '85 and there are some well used copies around so beware.
We have a Minolta specialist here in the UK for service but I doubt there are any parts.
DxO support is a big bonus.
As you say with the Sony Back Lit Sensor, a weight saving f/4 lens (actually f4-4.5) is not so much of a hindrance
For some obscure reason, Minolta sold the lens without a hood and flare is problem given the large (72mm) front end.
I use a 77mm rubber hood on a 77-72 step down ring; this accessory is essential.

I had one - not that impressed - especially on crop frame - and close focus was bothersome. also had the beercan. Very impressed with the 70-210 3.5-4.5 !
I would take my Nikon D5500 along with Tamron 18-270, 1.4 extender, and Tokina 11-16 . . . That way, I've pretty much got everything covered. . .

I have read mixed reviews about this lens. No one claims it's wonderful, just versital. I attended a very good jazz Christmas concert tonight. Pittsburgh has great native musical talent. I did not bring my camera because normally photography is not allowed. At the beginning of the show they announced that photograph was encouraged! I had a great seat, dead center, high up in the back row of the balcony. There were no obstructions between me and the stage. I found myself wishing I had my A99ii and the 28~135mmm lens, I just ordered, mounted on it. I could pulled back and show the entire band, then zoom into to show the musician's fingering. I think this lens might make a good video photographer's lens. What do I know? I seldom take videos and know nothing about it.

I did like the internal zoom of the 28-135 and beercan - but that also makes them overly large IMO ( and heavy)
Dave . . . Sounds like you are all set with your photo equipment trip to Texas. My recommendation, I too say take photos with your iPhones, there awesome.
Let me tell you about my traveling experience. I'm 73 years. Getting OLD is a pain in its self and I need equipment reduction in weight. My previous photo trips to Europe was in pain. Over kill with three lenses plus a teleconverter, too heavy. I have now purchase a Nikon 28-300mm 3.5-5.6 and will take my wide angle Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 with me on my next trip. I shoot mostly landscapes, buildings etc. and I do not need my other f/2.8 lenses any more. As for a tripod, I'm taking one especially for light travel.
Hope this information helps in the future. Take care of yourself.
Bring a wide angle lens and a tripod. Go downtown late at night for some great shots. There's so much to shoot. Have a great time and enjoy Texas.

I'm going to "Round Rock", near Austin. I have visited Texas several times. The thing I like most about Texas are it's people.
Okay gang, I think this question has now been answered many times. The title asked, "What would you bring for a weekend?" The inference I intended was I wanted to travel relatively light and not lug a lot of equipment.
I think the best answers were:
1) The old Minolta 28~135 lens. (So I bought one!)
2) iPhone (I have one.)
3) A small point and shoot. (I'm bringing my RX100M2 as a spare)
I had also mentioned that I'm going to Texas for a week. That's a different issue. A week is a long time! I might run into many subjects that I want to photograph (even though it is Texas). I decided to pack sturdy case that I can bring on the airplane with me. See the photo below. In this photo you can see my brand new A99II that is is going to travel with me until the "New" wares off it. I packed a tiny flash, a spare battery and a charger, an old Konica Minolta wide angle AF17-35mm F2.8-4(D) FF, a CZ 24-70 f/2.8 SSM FF, Sony 50mm f/1.4 FF (for indoor parties), Minolta 35-70 f/4 w/marco mode FF (just because I love this little lens), and my Sony 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 G SSM (just because there was room for it in my case and who knows, I might see something off in the distance?)
No, I'm not going to bring my tripod! I will bring a length of string with a 1/4 20 screw attached that be serve as type of monopod if I find I need one. There is a 1/4 TB of RAM memory within the camera.

Oooh! Goody, I hope it's a good one and look forward to your comments.
IMO it's one of the best Minolta zoom lenses, the only other ones I have is the 35-70/4 and 80-200/2.8.
Oh forgot, I have a Beercan but it's out on permanent loan.
The Minolta 28-135mm lens arrived yesterday.

Have you got any images taken with this combo?
50mm f/1.4
Minolta 35~70mm f/4 (a favorite lens of mine)
