Years ago, my wife and I each got a big Panasonic plasma TV - 500 Watts each!!! The new LEDs are well under 100 Watts.

My wife recently found an 8 year old 42 inch Vizio at a second hand for 80 bucks. Hooked up the antenna, plugged it in and turned it on. Beautiful!

I was all set to go to Best Buy in the morning and buy a 40" Samsung Class led 1080p hdtv. Then I started reading reviews. This tv is on sale at Best Buy for $249.00, but the reviews keep stating that the picture is lousy at more than 5-6' away and that the colors vary, depending on where you are sitting. Several reviews mention that the tv quit in less than a month and had to be returned. What experience have fellow hoggers had with tvs? What would you recommend for under $500.00? I don't have Cable, Dish or Direct TV. Just a small indoor antenna that resembles rabbit ears. All replies are welcome and appreciated.

I have several Samsungs and have had zero problems with them. Two of them are 40'1080 and they work fine on cable.

I would advise getting amreallyngood digital antenna, like Mohu or Winegard ($50 range).

Good luck

At Best Buy I looked at the Samsung and the Sony both. Bought the Sony and love it. These were not Black Friday deals, just regular sale. The salesman didn't even know he had the new Sony model. I had to guide him to his inventory to find my TV. Poor clerks are a nuisance.

I just did an impulse buy a couple days ago. I was in Costco and saw they had a 55" Samsung for $399. I'm going to replace a 42" JVC. It's a 1080p but there's not much programming for UD yet anyway. It was the last day of that price but I think they are still $429 or so.

In the same boat as tramsey, however it's been 25 years since my TV was hooked to anything, just use it for DVD's.

Isn't it a nice quiet boat. I got sick of looking at all the sex and violence and then the commercials that are so loud they make your hair stand on end. The only time I miss television is during football season. I listen to them on the radio and use my imagination just like the old times.

I would look up Crutchfield on the internet and get their advise. They are familiar with all the models they sell and they can explain to you what you get when you buy the upper models from the bottom of the line ones. Then you can make an intelligent decision for what you buy. Keep in mind, the great deals offered now at stores is their way of unloading their junk.

I never heard of a Black Friday TV. There are many stores giving 50% discount. I bought a pair of shoes for 50% discount. And they were not an inferior quality, specifically for Black Friday.

I've had Sonys for >30 years, both CRTs and LCDs, and have never had a failure, including several that lasted 15+years. i'm watching a Sony LED LCD 120 Hz right now that I've had for at least 6-7 years, and it has a superb picture.

Edit: just looked at the last post, and I feed my audio into a surround sound (Yamaha) receiver as well.

Don't think I'm going to be needing the surround sound. The volume is exceptional. I bought the Sony today and set it up. I have a 45% hearing loss in both ears but this one has sufficient volume. Some of the older shows seem a little blurry but for the most part it is extremely sharp. Thanks for your response and thoughts.

Good deal, enjoy. Hope it serves you well.
