I was all set to go to Best Buy in the morning and buy a 40" Samsung Class led 1080p hdtv. Then I started reading reviews. This tv is on sale at Best Buy for $249.00, but the reviews keep stating that the picture is lousy at more than 5-6' away and that the colors vary, depending on where you are sitting. Several reviews mention that the tv quit in less than a month and had to be returned. What experience have fellow hoggers had with tvs? What would you recommend for under $500.00? I don't have Cable, Dish or Direct TV. Just a small indoor antenna that resembles rabbit ears. All replies are welcome and appreciated.

The 2017 Consumer Reports buying guide lists a Sony KDL-40R510C as a
best buy. The only knock being fair audio.
I've always had good luck with Sony TVs, but the audio I feed into decent
surround sound systems.

Thank you for the quick response. We had a Sony back before the days of flat screens. The thing must have weighed 200lbs. We loved it but it finally went to the big Sony in the sky. I forgot about the Consumer Reports. Thanks for the reminder. I'll check that one out.

I've had Sonys for >30 years, both CRTs and LCDs, and have never had a failure, including several that lasted 15+years. i'm watching a Sony LED LCD 120 Hz right now that I've had for at least 6-7 years, and it has a superb picture.

Edit: just looked at the last post, and I feed my audio into a surround sound (Yamaha) receiver as well.

I'm going to check the availability of the 40" one mentioned in the first posted response tomorrow at Best Buy (or whoever has it and will price match) It may be the 60Hz. Is there a lot of difference in the refresh rate? I will probably add the surround sound also since I along with my mother have some hearing loss. Thanks for responding.

If you watch fast moving scenes such as sports, you can see a difference in The faster 120Hz or 240Hz refresh rate TVs. Whether it's worth the extra $ is a personal decision.

No, just movies and a few tv shows. If they have them up and running maybe I'll be able to see the difference. I'll be sure to ask before I buy.

We had three TVs in our house; one in living room, another in the kitchen and the last in the bedroom. About a week ago my wife and I realized we were talking just watching TV. We threw them all out; at first it was like with drawl symptoms but now we go walking and taking pictures. We belong to a book club and a camera club. We get what news we want from the local paper. Ah yes, life is good and it is quiet.

I've always been partial to Sony, never been disappointed with their products.

I have two Samsungs, from Sams Club and love them. Much better and cheaper than Sony.

The Samsung TV that Best Buy had for $249 was a special buy from Samsung with lower quality components just for Black Friday. I did a lot of research and found most Black Friday TVs were all lower quality than the standard version.

Do you really think any of the retail stores would sell their main line items for 50% off?

In the same boat as tramsey, however it's been 25 years since my TV was hooked to anything, just use it for DVD's.

Read reviews. I got a couple of Vizio TVs - good price, no complaints.
