Took the liberty of doing a quick tweak on the thumbnail of your hawk pic in Photoshop. It is a good pic. I'm guessing you were more than 50 ft. away.
Thanks it does look better. I was about 50ft away. I appreciate any advice
If "drab" is a problem, this is what made a difference when I began shooting with my Nikon D5100. There was a Neutral, Standard, and Vivid mode in "Set Picture Control". There is probably a similar choice on the D500. Being somewhat of a purist, I tried shooting in "Neutral", but all of my photos looked flat. So I selected "Standard" and tweaked some of the sharpness and contrast settings, and voila! all my photos suddenly had more pizzazz without looking gaudy. ("Vivid" will give you some gaudy, if you want that effect!) Hope you get those bird shots you're after. (I'm guessing you already have some feeders out to attract them to your location.)

Thanks I'll check out that setting. I do have some feeders out but plan on a few more for the winter season. Eagles and hawks are my favorites so I go out and look for them when I can. Usually just drive around the country side near where I live. Thanks for the info I really appreciate it!!

Welcome to the forum. You have a fine camera and lens. The D500 is now Nikon's best DX camera. There was a great Black Market deal on the D500. $1797 for body only. I'm building my lens collection now. Hopefully next Black Friday it will be the same price. Enjoy your new toys.
I think the deal is still available through B&H, Adorama and most likely other camera dealers.

I really appreciate the chance to be a part of this forum. I'm fairly new to the digital photography world and have a new found interest in bird photography. This spring my only child left home so what's more appropriate for the empty nest syndrome;)
I splurged and bought a D 500 Nikon with the 200 to 500 lens with the 1.7 x converter. Only trouble is I really don't know everything I need to get colorful sharp images. They all seem to be drab and lack clarity. I would appreciate any help and advice. Look forward to being a part of this group. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
I agree with the other UHH's lose the converter.
I suggest a sturdy tri-pod and a remote release.
by the way, great setup you have.

After getting a tripod, trying the advice and losing the converter I have been out taking a few shots(over 1000) and would live feedback on a couple of the images. Thanks in advance for your input.
I'm on my iPhone but even on the small screen you can see the difference. Good job. Now (not for me) edit your post and click store original. If you really want help from the likes of Gene51, please remember to always store original.

Well, what do you think?
(I'd be damned proud, especially if a lot of the rest look like these)
Now, your next attempts should be when you have better light - hand holding, and letting the VR do it's thing.

Well, well, isn't that a pleasure!?
Seeing someone log on trying to get advice, finding pages of it, wading through all the info (good and bad) and then coming up with some great images!
You can be sure that we're all pretty proud of you!
Just keep shooting, processing, shooting, processing, then shooting some more.
Best way to learn.
That pair of Eagles is wonderful. You have really stuck to it. Expecting some beautiful images!
Debbie- one more thing- The first image looks sharper than the second, but I can't really tell since it is not downloadable. It appears you can blow up either eagle head and it be clearer than the second picture. Have you tried that and am I correct?

Thanks! I can tell the difference but I'm my worst critic
