Johnny, I understand, but do not share, your sentiments. The cameras I own range in age from 6 to almost 70 years old. I love using them. I know them well and currently have only one that I'd like and is impossible to get, at the moment. I don't let that bother me, but instead concentrate of using what I have. If you care to see what a 45 year old camera can do, http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-425306-1.html

The problem is that I love my cameras until the new models comes out. It's frustrating because when the new models come out, I see all the weaknesses and flaws of the cameras I own and I like to have the latest and the greatest. I own the Sony RX100m4 and now the m5 is out which has much better focusing. I also own the Panasonic GH4 and soon the GH5 will be released and so on. I only can imagine what the improvements are going to be on the new GH5. It never ends. It wouldn't be so bad if I was rich but I'm not. I just purchased a house and now I need to use my funds towards things for the house. It looks like my upgrading days are over for a very long time. I think I need camera therapy! It is quite all right! You are a camera enthusiast, not a photography enthusiast. Many of us are lovers and collectors of elegant tools. It is like having a beautiful dog or horse. It just makes you feel good having it, handling it, admiring it.

We all like the nifty new stuff, and it is a great example of the power of marketing. As the earlier comments show, some have more resistance to GAS attacks. If you have spending priorities, that can be a powerful incentive to delay GAS. One technique I use on myself (that sometimes works) is to demand a specific NEED for the new item and a specific item that I will sell to compensate (partially) for the expense and space. Good luck.

I have a very good technique to control GAS attacks. It's called not enough money to obtain what I really want. Like a Nikon 400mm F2.8 lens. Oh well, maybe next week!!

Whenever you upgrade your purchase is basically out of day. Camera companies are continually putting out new models. They have to keep new ones coming out all the time to make profits. A person could go nuts always upgrading. And probably a little closer to the poorhouse too.

Improvements come fast. Your cameras won't stop taking great pics after new models come out. keep shootin' with your very good cameras. i've got a 7 year old DSLR and I am very happy with what I shoot with it.

I have not read the other posts, but here is a "cure" for you.

The worst camera that you own is superior to you. You are the weak link, a newer camera will take the same pictures as the older one. It will never make it to a cover of a magazine, it will never be a photo that other people want to buy. At least this is what I tell myself.

I surely know exactly how you feel. I was wanting the latest and greatest of every new Sony. I spent enough to buy a car on new bodies. Then it dawned on me! I suddenly became angry with the camera manufacturers and how they market us into believing. We need the newest features or we won't be able to make the best photo possible. Well, most of what hangs on my wall was taken with film and good glass. Some of my favorite digital shots, my first, a Nikon D70. I bave become more and more confused with all the extra buttons and menu options. I began longing for simple and easy to use but with the minimum amount of bells and whistles I need but with the BEST glass I can afford. And after going back to the Canon 50D, I have fallen in love again! Everything right where I remember it being and with that great AFFORDABLE Canon glass, great shots. Not one iota better than the latest and greatest Sony I just had to have. I hope thjs helps. Let me know. You'll enjoy putting thst money into your new house too!

You are on point. In the past, the equipment I wanted was never the equipment I already had. Although I have not spent years chasing equipment - to the point where one camera is good but the next one is better. I have built a solid package of equipment over the years, and am satisfied with what I have (even though my collection of camera bodies and lenses and accessories is nowhere near where I'd like it to be ).

My perspective is that cameras are tools, and that that a tool is just an extension of me. I have to adjust my settings for the best results. I need to experiment with technique, lighting, etc. to get the results my clients and I want. I need to understand the limitations of my equipment and how to make the most of them. Having the very latest equipment available won'€™t make me a good photographer, any more than eating a doughnut would make me a police officer. My philosophy is before investing in an upgraded body or lens, to invest in myself.

As I look in that camera bag filled with the equipment I take to photography assignments (see posted image), all of the components in that bag were in processes of being outdated the moment I purchased them. Equipment ages, styles change, and advances in imaging technology can happen literally hour by hour it's impossible to stay current. The only thing that is constant is our skill as photographers.

Cheers!

Q: How many cameras does a photographer need?
A: n+1, where n is the number of cameras the photographer currently owns

The bottom could be that if your camera isn't giving you what you want, upgrade. Like everything technology cost money...I think focus performance and sharpness come first but then people seem to demand pixels and resolution more. I loved my Canon mk iii and though it comes second in resolution to the mk iv the images have to be comparativly disearned to tell the difference. Where the iv shines is focus speed and low light accuracy. New prosessors are doing more to get that shot. I am most amazed at the ability to focus at a much higher rate and even sharper with a few lenses. Keepers are a good feeling. That said its back to Green Acres in my GE black and white tube TV...
