Do your home work and get the 28mm-300mm. I travel more than most. I leave the fast heavy lenses at home unless I'm shooting wildlife or models.

The 28-300 is not a pro lens. Those times that I grab it for travel with the 800E, I am always impressed. I must have a good version.

I picked up a d-200 and elected to go with the 18-200mm vr. i'm happy happy. I imagine the 18-300mm vr would also give great results .

I travel to shoot events, trade shows, board meetings and all the various support speakers that surround the meetings. I shoot with a Nikon 810 and travel with a 24-70, a 70-200 and a 60mm macro lens.
The 18-300mm seems like it would be a all in one lens for this type of shooting. Grant it, I realize it will not be as fast as the lens I've been lugging around on by belt, but is it worth the $$$ to pick one up and see? Does anyone use this lens and if so... your thoughts? Thank You

I use it all the time for the basic walk around lease. I bought it referbed from Nikon specifically for a foreign trip and it has meet every expectation that I have. Its not what I use for "serious" photography but if you are going to be on your feet all day, then this lens offers quite a good compromise.

I only use one lens the Nikon 18 300. Even though it is slow I like the idea of just carrying one lens and can take
any type of photos with. I use a D7100 with the lens

I RECENTLY GOT AN 18-300 AND LOVE IT. I HAVE A D5200, AND AS I EXPLAINED TO MY WIFE, I NEED A D5500 TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THIS FABULOUS LENS. THE BROWN TRUCK IS IN TRANSIT!
I REPLACED AN 18-140 AND A 55-300. FOR ME, AS AN AMATEUR, IT IS FAST AND SHARP AND IT ABOUT THE SAME SIZE AND WEIGHT AS THE 55-300!

You should know the 18-300mm is a DX lens which is for DX Nikon camera not for full frame like your D810. You may consider the FX 28-300mm, but it's not a pro grade lens like the 24-70mm, 70-200mm that you already owned.

I also use a NIKON D810 ... and I have the 28-300mm zoom on it practically all the time ... it is my 'walk-around' lens and the results are excellent. I use the 35 mm FX for satreet photography, when I venture downtown Gainesville. Good Luck.

AD - I use it to shoot indoor performances when I can't get close enough to use a faster lens. See examples at http://www.photography.gtmanos.com/project-proofs-previews/#/stu-n-the-gurus/ This set was shot from a balcony maybe 75 feet from the stage.

This lens goes from f/3.5 to f/5.6 in nothing flat - by the time you are at 75mm, you are also at f/5.6. It is also heavy, more so than the 70-200mm that many recommend. I've used both and frankly prefer the 18-300mm, although both do a good job.

I enjoy this lens when I travel by air and limited to what I can take. Although I found it soft at 300mm, when I back down to about 270mm or so its tack sharp. I overcome the fstop by increasing ISO or using a small flash like the sb 400.

I'd look at the 24 to 120 f4 VR Nikon lens-let it replace your 24-70. The VR more than compensates for the 1 stop difference. It is sharp thru its entire range.

For my D800E I have a 28-300 and love it. It's on my camera 80% of the time. I'm a travel/landscape/garden photographer.

adfoto I have both the 18-300mm (DX) and the 28-300mm (FX) Nikkors... They are prosumer super zooms which are decidedly not in the same league as your current glass... That said, they can/do have there place... Both are best i.e. highest acuity at f/8.0 and are soft wide open... Of the two the 18-300mm (newer) is the better of the lot in my humble estimation albeit for crop sensors only.

Since you are an event shooter I would push you toward the 24-120mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S Nikkor VR instead... Zooming with your feet is a much wiser choice here.... At 670g it is less than half the weight of the 70-200mm VR II and for events a rather appropriate zoom range... Others posting here share this mindset...

Since you asked... here are examples (wedding & test creatives) of the 28-300mm (which I assume you actually meant in your post). For weddings it's borderline acceptable but certainly far from ideal and decidedly not for interiors although it works just fine for creative testing where there isn't a client in the mix... Hope this helps or is at least food for thought...

I used to have a Tamron 18-270 on a Canon 50D. I replaced that a couple years ago with a Nikon D7200, and had to decide what lens to get. I like the super zooms for overall flexibility, and I never have to change it on the body, losing time and letting dirt in. I considered the Tamron again, the Nikon 18-300, and the Nikon 18-200. After reading as many technical comparisons as I could find, I went with the N 18-200 as the one with the best image quality, and have been quite happy with it.

I have an 18-300 but I use it in my crop sensor D200 only and I use that camera only for travel.

I love this combination since it gets me a relatively good wide angle and a good telephoto too all in one package. Since the camera also has a built in flash I travel only with the camera, no extra lenses, no flash. What could be better. But to also answer the obvious question, no it's not the best lens on the market but for what I use it for it's a lovely compromise.

I also have the 28-300. That's an FX lens. What happened was that I got spoiled with the 18-300 range so when Nikon came out with what seemed close I went for it. That lens sits on my D800 and on my D3, both FX cameras. Again I use it sometimes for travel, sometimes for scenery and often for events where I can use a flash. It's also often my favourite walk around lens. And like the other one, this one is also not perfect but it's close enough. No event organizers have ever complained about the pictures.

But ... when I can't use a flash for an event, or I'm working outside in the dark, I'm back to the holy trinity - 12-24 mm, 24-70 mm and the 70-200 mm all of them F 2.8. Those remain my favourites all the time and they take excellent pictures. In fact while no one has complained about pictures from the other lens, these three get me compliments.
