How would you hide camera gear in a Grand Cherokee?

The roll-up lid is great but ours only covered the back section about half way up. When I travel any distance I use a moderate strength steel cable and lock together all the cases together. In that way a thief is going to be dragging them all out and will likely give up. Curious eyes can be equaled by a light colored tarp plus keeps the heat at bay.

leave it at the nearest hotel in their safe ..then drive to your hiking location..there is no way i would leave any gear in a car ..hidden or not i always say my car has insurance for theft but try proving your camera gear was in there..besides would you want to lose your memory cards etc along with it..

Hi 'katbandit'... First, I agree that the hotel/motel 'safe' would work (get a detailed receipt); ...However, in the event a 'HorM' isn't available, then take a Look at my previous reply, re: the detailed Ins Pol, which requires you to have 'detailed-sales-receipts'. --- Thanks 'KB'

A few years back, we had a Jeep Grand Cherokee that came with one of those.
It was great, as far as I was concerned. I'd recommend looking into that.

The Cherokee is a closed and locked vehicle. Someone suggested converting a fancy diaper bag to carry the camera gear. Diaper bags can handle a lot because they have many pockets and will fit some of those padded compartment separators. I took this advice last year on a trip to the Mediterranean. What thief would think to steal a diaper bag, anticipating a bunch of soiled diapers? All I know is that it worked. Of course it doesn't look very professional and other people won't see a "Photographer On Duty," LOL but nobody stole my camera gear.

On my 1988 Ford Ranger the cover over the jumpseat area came with the vehicle-not a $$$ accessory.

Styrofoam cooler with mud on the lid.

After Yellowstone we pulled into the Four Seasons in Denver for a Family Wedding- the lid on our Styrofoam Cooler was Duck Taped together! The Bellman had a good chuckle bringing it up to our room,
where he promptly ordered us a mini refrigerator.

After the engine cools down, put your gear under the hood!

Our Volvo XC-60 has a pullover cargo area cover that conceals everything behind the second row of seats. So did our Mercedes ML-320. Our Volvo XC-90 didn't have one so we bought a black bed sheet and kept it in the car to cover everything back there. That's not to say that criminals might think the coverage means there's something valuable in the car. Damned if you do and damned if you don't applies, I guess. If it's really a bad area for theft, I'd take less gear and carry it.

I could never feel safe with a car that didn't have a way to secure my equipment. If all you have to do it break a window to get at my equipment, I'm not leaving it in the car. Back when I was looking for a car, I wanted a hybrid like the Toyota Prius but I didn't feel safe with the hatchback type of car. So I got a Honda Civic with a real locking trunk. Trunks aren't always the most secure either. A friend of mine had a Toyota Corolla with a trunk and someone followed him to a drugstore after he put his equipment away in his trunk at the sanctuary. They broke a window, popped the lever to the trunk and took his equipment. My Honda has a lock on the lever so with that locked they would have to actually use a pry bar or drill out the lock to get it open. Most thieves can't be bothered to defeat locks if it might take more than a minute or two.

I have a Jeep Wrangler too. The only way I'd put my equipment in it was if I only took the equipment I was going to be using so that I wouldn't be leaving anything inside of value because breaking a window is all it would take to get my stuff. So I took out the back seat, (easy to do on a Wrangler) and installed a vault large enough to hold anything I take with me. Like this: http://www.quadratec.com/products/14141_0001_07.htm?gclid=CjwKEAjwm_K_BRDx5o-sxq6ouXASJAC7TsFLWLeDo39sDbrlBMTRjbBTGyLY-2KkDMz7PPLk4hqEwBoCoKPw_wcB

It works great because now they'd have to defeat the lock on the swing away tailgate, then the lock on the vault. It would take them too much time.

Do you have the shade that overs the back compartment? (About a hundred dollars)
Go to Joanne Fabric and buy a yard and a half of black felt for twenty bucks, and cover everything in the back.
I am driving my sixth Jeep, and no issues.
Hope this helps.

That was my solution as well. So far, so good.

My old Jeep Cherokee you got to the spare tire in the trunk floor. If that is the case then can always take out the spare and put it in there. I haven't had one for years so I don't know if this is still the same.

The make a mess is the best and easiest along with not advertising your goods. I have an '05 CRV with no trunk. I just take whatever, put it on the floor and throw junk on top. It takes too much time to move stuff to be worthwhile and you can't see the goods. I'm not familiar with the rear seats of the Jeep but if they fold you may have enough space under them to store stuff. I had an '88 Wrangler, rag doors, roof and even the glove box didn't lock. I bolted a solid lockable tool box in the rear and store my stuff in it. Never had a problem. Usually out of sight out of mind works.

I've been thinking of converting a van such as a Transit or e350 (something like that) into a simplified RV. Concerned about security for my camera gear, in a book on how to do a conversion, I read that the author bolted a Ridgid job box/storage chest) to the floor - there are a couple of sizes. The padlocks used cannot be accessed to be cut. That's what I'll do.

In my pickup, I don't carry a lot of gear with me, but what I do have with me is on the floor on the passenger side or behind the seats under a pile of nondescript rumpled jackets, a blanket, the window sunscreen and whatever else is handy, looking like a mishmash of junk and debris. My pickup, well taken care of mechanically, has never been garaged and is 15 years old. I mean... who could afford expensive camera gear when they drive something that looks like its best days are past?
