Sorry but the 70-300s all all fx lenses which work well on a dx camera.

I have had the 70-300 vr from the time it came out. For the money its hard to beat it. Great from 70mm -260mm. A little soft at 300. Very fast focusing so it works well in decent light for sporting events,. However, I lost some shots because what I needed at that very moment was a wider aperture. The 28-300 works well but is slower to focus than the 70-300. Life has trade offs and get what you want if you can afford it. The 70-300 sell used for a little over $100. The vr model used goes for about $400. The 28-300 can probably be found for about $600. All of them do a nice job, but I prefer the 70-300 vr

I have it and love it.
It stays on my D7000 almost all the time. I keep my 18-200 VR ll on my D7200 all the time. Usually have both with unless after specifics.

I wasn't aware of these two new lenses. Not sure why Nikon made then except for the lower price and maybe it is lighter. I have used my original 70-300 vr on both dx cameras and fx cameras and found it worked exceptionally well. However they are listed cheaper than new than mine, so if they work equally well great. But I do see the negative of the new dx 70-300s. They will probably venette when used on a fx camera. So if you're intending to eventually buy a fx camera, you should take that into consideration.

I have the 70-300 VR lens and find it very useful on my D5500. It is sharper than the 55-300 and has the advantage of instant manual over ride of the auto focus, something lacking in the 55-300. It is also a true 300mm at closer ranges, something that the 28-300 is not. For the price that Nikon asks for this lens I don't think you can go wrong with buying one. You will find the VR very useful at higher focal ranges. It has the added advantage that if you ever decide to go full frame, it was designed for that, so you would be saving some money over buying a 55-300.

Thanks. I spoke with B&H and the new DX may not work on all DSLR's without a firmware update. I just ordered the FX one from them. Best Buy has it but I trust B&H more!

Be careful about buying lenses from Best Buy. A lot of the Nikon lenses on their shelves are gray market. The lenses are identical to the US version ones but without the warranty.

That's why I went with B&H. They have a 30 day return policy and Best Buy has a 15 day one with a lot of qualifying exceptions. I have never gone wrong with B&H. Bought the Nikon 80-400 and it went on sale a week later for $300 less. A phone call got me the difference credited back to me. Class act.

Barb first and foremost stay with a DX lens for general purpose use... the weight penalty of FX glass is not justified in this scenario...
With this in mind the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is my "go to" for general purpose use albeit it is a tad soft in the corners but acceptably sharp at the center.
I also have the older 18-200 3.5-5.6 VR but seldom if ever use it now...
Please be advised that the newer and lighter AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens is not at the same level as the f/3.5-5.6G a.k.a. IQ isn't even close... You get what you pay for and yes while it is $300 less but that said it can't hold a candle to the f/3.5-5.6G...
Also the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens at 830g is only half the weight of your 80-400mm so it is easily hand holdable...

I have had one for several years and used it with my D90 and now with my D7100 and I love it. My nephew took one look at some shots I took with it and bought one. My walk around lens is the 24-85 afs so they make a nice pair. It did well enough for me that I traded in my Tokina f4 300mm prime lens on the D7100.

Made the mistake of buying a 70-200 without VR. I've wasted my money. I have more out of focus shots than in.
Even with fast shutter speeds etc.
Get VR version you won't regret it.

In the past I was using a Nikon D 40 w Tamron 18-270mm lens. It covers the area I want. My photo buddy Bill uses the Tamron 16-300mm . Both great lens. Now I have a Nikon D 5100.
