MT, I can't find a way to format the card in my Mac. Do I have to shoot an image or two, then download them and have the computer delete the images for me?

Also, I purchased the cards through Amazon and they came in individual clear cases but no SanDisk packaging.

No - don't format with the Mac, use the camera to format the card. The Mac does not know about the directory structure that the camera will need.

I think the suggestion was to format in the Mac and then in the camera to make sure it was thoroughly wiped.

Thats EXACTLY why you need to format outside the camera first when you have a card problem, it gives the camera a blank card to format the way it needs it. Reformatting in the camera will not correct corrupted proprietary files as it recognizes them and leaves them be. Reformatting first in the computer wipes out these proprietary files so the camera can re-install them. The computer reformat basically gives the camera a brand new card, as in a blank slate. This is always the procedure you need to follow when you are having card problems. Especially when buying used cards as you have no idea what proprietary structure is already on that card from a previous user.

Approximately two years ago, I had a similar problem in that I'd put a card in the camera and it would spit out an error saying there was no card, or some other error message. This would happen at irregular intervals. The card is a Sandisk 8G. The problem was in the camera. I sent it in under warranty. Since Nikon worked on it, or replaced what ever part was throwing that error, I've had no further issues.

I have to agree with MT as long as you reformat the card with the camera after you formatted it with the computer.

To format with a Mac insert card open the application disk utility select card from left hand screen select erase.

fotogk, There are several options in the format box and then there is erase in the lower right hand corner. I used that option since I didn't know which (if any) of the format options I should choose.

I had a similar problem with the same camera and card. I tried to look at some previously taken shots and got message saying that card was blank.(this was after at least 50 shots). I turned off camera, removed card and simply replaced it and all was well. All photos were present. I think that somehow the card jiggled a little and was not seated properly. at any rate I have continued with the card and the camera and have not had the problem again.
What I learned was to periodically look at my photos to make sure they have been recorded.

Ran into ERR using new PNY 32,class 10 from BJs wholesale, on D7000, returned/replaced card with duplicate, again got ERR msg. Replaced with Lexar Platinum II, 8gb,class 6 and have had no issues. Maybe it's the larger capacity cards? I also DO NOT remove card from camera, use cord to copy to PC after reading recommendations on this forum.

It's frustrating when something like this happens, but it amazes me that the system works at all. The camera lets in photons of light, and magic happens inside the camera. Then a bunch of 1's and 0's get put onto a tiny card. When we push a button on the camera, those 1's and 0's jump around and show us a pretty picture. When we do some more manilulations, all those bits race from the card to a computer, while leaving a copy of themselves behind.

If you were to describe this process to Ansel Adams, he'd think you were crazy.

1) If you are getting error message your card is likely at fault. Toss it or get your money back! Not worth the risk of loosing pix, which will surely happen sooner or later, just as day follows night. 2) If it came in a non Sandisk package it is more than likely a fake! Toss it! I doubt you will get your money back if it is grey market.

I am NOT one of the "Digital Gurus" on this site, but one of the first things I learned was to put the mem card into the camera and leave it... Do all your downloading from cam to 'puter by cable and the main reason for that is to lessen any chances of damiging your card...
As for your err displayes, I'll leave that to someone else, but I will ask, does it happen in another camera ?? If so, then chances are it is card problem...

Interesting - one of the first things I heard/read(?) was to use a card reader as connecting the camera to the computer uses up the battery rather quickly. I always use a card reader and have yet to experience any problem with a card or an image

I have a Nikon D7000 camera also - love it - but I had the very same problem with a memory card. I got a Sandisk Extreme 8 gig Class 10 SD card and my camera gave me an error message. It just froze up so I removed the card and used another one that I had which worked just fine. I got mine from Amazon. I contacted them and returned the card. Seemed like it may have been bad out of the box. I have used other brands and sizes of memory cards and everything works just fine except for that one. Kind of weird. I never got a satisfactory answer from anyone who I talked to about it, except maybe it was bad right from the start.

I have the Nikon D7000 which I just love. Anyway, I had the same memory card problem with a Sandisk Extreme 8 gig Class 10 card. My camera showed an error message, which just said "ERR". My camera froze up. I removed the card and replaced it with another one that I had and it was fine. Has been fine ever since. I returned the card from where I bought it. I have asked several people why it did that - never really got a good answer except that it may have just been a bad card from the start. Kind of weird!!
