I recently put two Sandisk 16 GB class 10 Extreme HD Video cards into my D7000. I formatted each card immediately after putting them into the camera for the first time. On occasion I have been getting 'err' in the display and a warning on the playback screen. I now have to check every image to see if it took. I didn't have any problems with the 4 GB Sony class 4 cards I still have. Any ideas as to what is happening? Did I get two bad cards? Should I send them back for replacements?

Also, I have been removing the cards and inserting them into my MacBook pro to download images. Is there any difference between doing this and connecting the camera via the USB cable? I wouldn't think so. Thanks, Rich

I use Sandisk 1GB, 2GB and a 4GB on my D40 and have never had a real issue. I periodically format them in the camera, but not each time. Without knowing exactly what the error message said, it's hard to guess.

Some people here will say never remove the cards and always use the cable to download the images to the computer, but either way will work. I've done both and don't have a preference.

I am NOT one of the "Digital Gurus" on this site, but one of the first things I learned was to put the mem card into the camera and leave it... Do all your downloading from cam to 'puter by cable and the main reason for that is to lessen any chances of damiging your card...
As for your err displayes, I'll leave that to someone else, but I will ask, does it happen in another camera ?? If so, then chances are it is card problem...

I don't have another camera to test that theory. I have a D70 but that uses a CF card.

I will write down exactly what the error message says the next time it happens.

SanDisc is an excellent brand with a lifeteime warranty, so you're not stuck with them. Removing the cards or using the cable shouldn't make any difference. I prefer not to remove the cards, since I figure that's just a little more physical activity/moving parts. If I'm not using my Eye-Fi card, I use a cable to upload.

Do you get the 'err' message before taking pictures, or as you are adding photos? I skimmed through my D7000 manual, but I didn't see anything about compatible SD cards. Maybe I just missed it.

The error happens right after I take the picture. I then have to remove the card and reinsert for it to work again. Then I reshoot the photo.

Page 319 I believe has the compatible SD card list.

I would say there is a problem with the cards. The D7000 should support the UHS-I type cards.

Did you purchase it from a reputable dealer? There are a lot of counterfeit memory cards out there. I come across far too many of them.

Thanks. I have a pdf copy of the manual on my computer, and I did a search for "SD card" and "compatible." I guess I should have tried "SD memory."

I would return the cards.

One of the responders, SanDisc Professor, says he can't understand why it would be necessary to format a new card. I think he has chosen the wrong screen name for himself.

I use the same cards with exemplary results.
Try using one of these in slot 1 and a different card in slot 2, do that with both cards. If one gives you an error then that card may be bad, if they both do, you may be the victim of counterfeit cards. I would reformat one in your computer, and then reformat it again in camera just to test the card also. The double format in 2 devices will completely clear the card and start fresh, a reformat in your camera will leave related data for the camera in place and it could be that some of that data is corrupted. Good luck

MT, I can't find a way to format the card in my Mac. Do I have to shoot an image or two, then download them and have the computer delete the images for me?

Also, I purchased the cards through Amazon and they came in individual clear cases but no SanDisk packaging.

I don't know anything about Macs, but in windows all you do is go to "Computer" system window, right click on the drive in question, and click "format". It will completely wipe out the card and give you a truely blank card, ready to format to your camera again.

Without factory packaging you have no idea what you are really buying, they are obviously used, and very possibly counterfeit, very hard to determine.

Here you go. http://www.ehow.com/how_4794433_format-sd-card-mac.html

As for Amazon, they take returns and pay the postage on defective items. Sign in and go to Your Account > Your Orders. Find the cards and click on Available Actions.

No - don't format with the Mac, use the camera to format the card. The Mac does not know about the directory structure that the camera will need.
