Just curious: why are they images rather than photographs?

Mainly? Image, photograph, and picture are synonyms.

To me, image is all-encompassing. If I were to break it down, a photograph is what comes out of a camera (with minimal modification). An image is something that is created from a photograph. To me, once you add effects, like solarization, to a picture, it becomes an image. A drawing is also an image, but I call it a drawing...
(Back in the film days, what was on the exposed film before it was developed, was referred to as a latent image.)

Images do not have to be created from photos. They can be drawn, sketched, etched, painted, printed from computer code (images of vector or bitmap drawings)...

The world of imaging includes whatever visual constructs we can see with our eyes. Photography is but a subset.

But within that subset are the variations from the raw image straight out of the camera to the ultimate manipulated image, from scientific to fiction, from IR to UV and everything in between, from the single photo to the multiple images or layers, from reality to fantasy, from color to black and white, from the beautiful and pleasing to the ugly and frightening - a slice of life and all of its multitude of variations. Some will look at life, some will not look. Most photographers will always look, capture what they see, and present it for the rest of us to see.

Yep. The best writers know the art of word smithing. Writing with light can involve the same degree of skill.

I was on a trans panama canal cruise in April/May Miami to San Diego. Sleep well the night before because it is a wonderful and long day going through the southern locks, Gatun Lake and the northern locks. So much fun. When the big freighters are going through, it seems they might get stuck, but they have 8 or so inches to spare on either side. Your cruise ship will be tight too. Enjoy your trip. We had a blast.

Yes, they have in common the necessity of spending years in practice to master the best relation of parts for a worthy product.

it's a hobby I always wanted to be a part of. I know my artistic and skill limitations, but still get as involved as my finances allow. the fact that others are better at it than I doesn't hamper my enjoyment.

I enjoy wildlife and landscape, so photography for me is a way to keep my old body and mind sharp and in shape. It is a way to wear myself out, yet keep me calm and at peace. It is a way to challenge my mind and body to find the beauty in the world we live in, and a way to understand how to share this world with all that walks, crawls, and flies in this world, as well as all that grows to make this place we call home beautiful.

You 'wrote' almost exactly that which describes what photography is to me!

Good to have shared hobbies. There are like minded people that aren't involved in political discussions. Good shooting.
