For me it is most and foremost a tool.

I use it to recall events or situations, to serve as a reminder (on what NOT to do), to keep track of what I am doing like when I take something apart (to put it back together correctly) or many other things that have nothing to do with some will call 'art'. I sometime use a series to tel a story. The captures are then illustrations, a support.

Art for me is, well, something I have long ago placed in the garbage can. I see more artistry in music than in visualization; I am not a musician i just listen.

Yet I lived with the income for a while and still sell some images from time to time. Note: IMAGES, not photographs.

So, what is photography for you?

I enjoy wildlife and landscape, so photography for me is a way to keep my old body and mind sharp and in shape. It is a way to wear myself out, yet keep me calm and at peace. It is a way to challenge my mind and body to find the beauty in the world we live in, and a way to understand how to share this world with all that walks, crawls, and flies in this world, as well as all that grows to make this place we call home beautiful.

Seems to me you must be looking at art to some degree still. There aren't too many shots of dissected equipment on the site.

To me, it is primarily a chronology of life, particularly travel to faraway places (India, China, Eastern Europe, etc), and occasionally when the mood strikes me, an artistic photo... I don't do much "art" in pp, but try to get it in the image itself.

Going on a cruise from Vancouver, Canada thru Panama Canal to Ft. Lauderdale in about 3 weeks. Will post some of those.

And you should, especially that they have redone the canal most of it recently....

#1 A record for participants in "events" (motor racing and classical music concerts)
#2 A record of our family.
#3 Show people part of my world.
#4 A reason to get out (of the house) and enjoying life. (sunrises and nature photography mostly)

For many years skydiving was the activity that relaxed and de-stressed me. A work injury made it unwise for me to continue in the sport. Photography is now the activity that relaxes, de-stresses, and on the occasions when I get it right, gives me satisfaction. The end-of-day parties aren't as good, but it is still a lot of fun!

In a way its my social life. Most of the friends I have today I met while photographing them. I have also met and spent time with college presidents, politicians, high ranking military officers. Have met a photographer that worked for National Geographic, the AP, and others that are very well known. Have been on the sidelines at college sports events and in the locker rooms with the players, produced documentaries for the Army. A lot of other things are coming to mind. Individually none of those things seemed to mean much at the time, but when I look back on it, I have had so many opportunities I never would have had otherwise. It all began when my mentor opened a door for me and I walked thru it. The advice he gave me was to "never say no" to an assignment. I am glad I followed his advice.

I do photography for its own sake, and to fulfill myself.

Photography functions as a craft that may rise to art in the right hands.

A photograph cannot tell a story in the conventional sense, although a photograph has a visual voice.

For me it is a view of the world and a view of life. I look around me and see things that I would be missing if it were not for photography. And then I try to capture that three dimensional slice in a two dimensional frame. And then I try to share what I have found.

I whole hardheartedly agree. There has been threads on UHH on that subject that were both informative and enlightening.
