......a good camera.......that takes good pics.......

I hope you appreciate that your idea of what "good" is will have been coloured by your use of your DSLR. Any compact will have a small sensor that will be prone to blown highlights, ISO noise, softness etc. In other words it won't measure up to what you've become used to with your DSLR. Compact cameras with 1" sensors will come closest to the image quality that you've come to expect from your current camera.

I think you'll find that a 4/3 sensor is much larger than a 1" sensor.

Fair enough, if the OP is happy with the extra camera size and limited zoom (and according to other posts the LX100 doesn't focus at infinity).

Absolutely, right!
Of course!
But where are we going with that? How about the 8"x10" size view camera which has many, many times larger film area than the so called "full size" 24mm x 36mm sensor?
Larger sensors need physically larger lenses (or zooms) and thus will make the camera larger - and that is what she already has and will not want to or will not be able to (as she stated) carry such a large camera every day.
Lightweight camera, quick to use, no lens changing, no missed pictures.

By the way, that small sensor (1/2.3) WILL comfortably deliver a very good print sizes over 11"x14" - and on occasions properly exposed, with a tripod, even 24"x36" prints.
Just try it and enjoy the convenience of having a camera you can carry with you all the time!
It boils down to: Take the right tool for the job!
I love my SLR's - but not on a climb!

How many prints over 8"x10" do you usually make? Are you going to build a larger house soon - just for your prints?

Same here. Almost certainly going for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS100.

I too, am a D7100 owner, and a month or so ago was in the same position you are now. I asked here and started my search based on the recommendations I received. I'm heading to a three-day concert event in California in October, and they won't allow cameras with removable lenses in. That ruled out mirrorless, which is a shame because there are some great mirrorless out there.

My personal requirements included wanting a viewfinder, good low-light capability, a decent amount of zoom, relatively high megapixel, ability to shoot RAW, wifi-enabled, pocketable and Manual capability. After a lot of searching, a lot of reading, and some time in a local camera store handling cameras on my narrowed down list, I chose the Canon G5X. The G7x Mark II is a great camera, but does not have the viewfinder. And the Nikons coming out soon look great, but again, no viewfinder.

If you don't need it right away, you can do what I did and watch B&H and Adorama for specials and open box deals. I got mine from B&H as an open box and saved roughly $150 on the retail price. When I received it, it looked brand new!

Good luck!

Dennis

True, but I think we are only comparing say a Sony RX100 which is indeed small and yet takes great pictures, and an Olympus Pen which is a bit larger but has a 4/3 sensor. It all depends on what the OP is looking for in terms of weight and size.

I continue to be amazed with the overall quality of my Canon SX50. Very hard to beat. Sometimes available for a reasonable price on Canon's site.

Although your tittle asking for a P&S but my guess is that you want a small camera and not a P&S right?

I had a Sony I was happy with but gave it to a family member who was in need of a camera.

Right now, before I make any decision I am waiting for the Nikon DL series to be released. I want to see some hands on reviews. They will have a 1inch sensor and promise to have better focusing than many of the competitors. I would just hate to buy one of the cameras already mentioned and then find out the Nikon is noticeably better.

A lot of folks here that gave recommendations do post pictures on the site. You might as well look at some results from your short list.

Panasonic's LF1 and LX7 both sell for about £250 in the UK.

I'm not sure that this is the right place to ask a lady what her tittles are asking for...
