I currently have a Nikon D7100 camera, but would like to have a good camera that is small and compact that takes good pics. Anybody have any good recommendations?

There's lots of choices out there, just depends on how much you want to spend. For Nikon there's the p7800, Canon G16, Fujifiln X series cameras just to name a few. They can cost anywhere from $500.00 to $1000.00. They might be a little bigger than your average fixed lens point & shoot camera but a lot smaller than your D7100. Good luck, hope this helps.

Dgusty3 - You might begin your search by going to the excellent UHH Search tool at the top of this page. Type in something like "point & shoot". Click on "advanced options". Leave the section choice on "all sections". Leave "User Name" blank. Click the little box for "Show only recent topics" => the result should be a (long) list of recent topics about point and shoot cameras and their features. There are many to choose from and learning what UHHers have used and like can help focus your search.

Just returned two Panasonic LUMIX LX100's, and my local dealer found his display model had the same problem - will not focus at "infinity." I was looking to replace my Sony RX100 "walkabout" camera due to what I consider some of its frustrating operational issues, and was talking myself into the larger size of the LX100 when I discovered the problem. Since the Lux D109 is the same camera, I'd be leery of that as well. I ended up with a Canon G5 X. Not perfect, but works for me in spite of my being more of a Nikon guy (D7100). But then you were looking quite a while ago so I'm sure you found something!

I use the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-HX9V as my "go to" point & shoot.

This incredible little point and shoot even has a mode selection dial on top....the models of this camera that came before and AFTER never matched the features and robust build of this specific model.. I actually have 4 of these that i use to compliment my NIKON AND CANON DSLR's and Sony NEX/A6000 and Alpha models since a lot of the features common in those Sonys are on the HX9V...

This is the best point & shoot I have ever owned and just a great overall camera period.....

3rd party Sony BG-1 batteries and chargers are very inexpensive and available on amazon and ebay...

the Sony HX0V itself is from 80 to 130 dollars on amazon 3rd party vendors used or EBAY or occasionally on KEH.COM if for sale in that day's inventory...

here is an excellent review... good luck... i love having this as my trusty back up... Sony made a true classic here as is the Sony A6000..

P&S is a derogatory term and brings to mind the cameras that sell for less than $50 and give trash photos. I gather that you really want a compact quality superzoom that fits into a small belt pack; there for you to become a "Quickdraw Mc Graw" 24/7. I have a fully glassed Sony A65 in a backpack... dust on the zipper; in contrast I have a Sony SX50 superzoom that is with me 24/7 and takes great photos. Sure some defects.... like noise etc... but that is what my Topaz plugin systems are for.

Google "best superzoom compact camera 2016" (or for 2015 etc.. they are lower cost) .... read many test results.... while UHH people too often prefer to opine, test results are the key. While we love Bridge cameras... they are simply smaller DSLR cameras and too bulky. IN THE POCKET is the key to many great photos. The best photos are the ones you take vs the ones you miss.

Preferable is having the ability to attach filters. My SX50 required that I use a filter ring with the male threads removed with magnetic sheet added and a like ring attached to camera. Works great and only adds 1/16" to camera. Walmart sells sheets in crafts section. My SX50 now takes inexpensive 37mm filters... highly versatile system.

Being mainly a Nikon guy, I did buy a Canon S95 years ago and it has served me well even as a backup. It's been replaced by the S100 ($369 on Amazon). It's tack sharp and when I import the photos into LR, it seems I never really have to adjust them much if at all. The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't have a viewfinder which I prefer.

I agree with the Olympus Pen-F, but take a look at all Olympus cameras. The only problem is you don't
have the lens selection you would have with Canon or Nikon.

I have a D7100 also, and also like to have a smaller simple camera for some occasions, like kayaking. I tried a "bridge camera" and found it clumsy and not all that small. Traded it for a Canon SX720 and am so far pleased, impressed with how it handles high contrast situations. It's under $400 and if your budget is in that range check it out, and also the Nikon A700, which was not in stock when I shopped and I was anxious to buy something.

If you are in the market for a P & S, and want to have a view finder, I think the best thing you can do is to get a Nikon P900. It has tack sharp image quality and a reach that is 2000mm. If you don't mind not having a view finder, Sony RX100 whatever version is current would fit the bill, I think. Good luck.

Sony DSC-RX-100M2, you can still get great deals off ebay used and this camera is GREAT, PLUS you can add a sony flash to the top cause it has a hot shoe. Fantastic image quality.

I have the Sony RX100 MIV and it takes great pictures but I don't find it fun to hold and use and it has little/no zoom. So I was doing some research and found the Lumix ZS100 - this looks interesting because it has a 1 inch sensor and 10 X Zoom !!!!! I have enjoyed Lumix in the past - that one may be worth checking out. Since you are familiar with Nikon, I think they are coming out with some fancy pants cameras the "DL" line - might be fun.
I also have the Sony HX80 - which has the 30x zoom, it actually takes really good pictures, but it stinks in low light.
Have Fun - let us know what you end up with
