Sony SX50?

The SX50 is a fine camera, but I believe Canon has not produced any in a while. They are available, however, on Amazon.

Hi Dqusty3,

I too, have the D7100 which I love but, did not want to take it with me to France for a family wedding and some "snapshots" of Paris. I truly spend a lot of time researching and bought the (what I call expensive) Panasonic Lumix ZS 100 (it shoots raw) and I LOVE IT!!!

It is always difficult to buy the "best" camera....as all reviews have pros and cons...and everyone has different expections, but, I am extremely happy with this little "throw in my bag" and go camera.

Yes, I do photography and I do "snapshots" and sometimes, I can actually get a "photograph" outta of a "snapshot"...

Get the best you can afford...and let us know what you decide on.

Hi Dgusty3,
I'm a Nikon guy so my recommendation will follow that product line. My grab-and-run camera is a Nikon P510 which would be similar to a P900 but with 42X reach rather than the P900's 83x reach. It's not my D750 but I've been pleased with the P510's performance and based on what I hear here on UHH the P900 would be a very good P & S camera. AND it reaches to 2000mm (equiv.) if needed. Good luck and let us know which camera you decide to get. Take care & ...

You may want to check out the Canon G7X MKII. I was looking at the Sony RX100X series but settled on the G7. I have not regretted it. Takes great pictures and will allow me to have a camera that is lighter with smaller footprint for Europe next month. It will allow me to do many of the things that my 70D does including HDR and Raw.

Canon Elph, many flavors
For more sophistication, try Sony Rx100, four flavors..

I also have the 7100. After much trial...both bridge camera and compact Panasonics, I went to the Olympus Stylus 1s. Awesome camera. 10x telephoto - so roughly the 24-270 equivalent of a lens. Not the cheapest choice, but great shots. The newest Nikon compact is also due out in October. I would have loved to get that camera, but needed a travel camera before its release.

How small and compact, D?? Do you want it to fit in your shirt pocket?

Rangefinder types of mirrorless cameras could be what you need. They are small, light and very capable with good optics. Excellent choice for traveling.
I am not familiar with p&s cameras and less familiar with bridge cameras. The p&s cameras have lost to the cell phones when it came to the consumer's market.
The biggest advantage in my opinion of a small mirrorless camera is the use of interchangeable lenses. Second hand mirrorless cameras are reasonably cheap and excellent performers in good light.

I have a D7100 too, and decided on Olympus OMD cameras for something smaller to lug around on trips -- and am more than satisfied with the results.

Canon G9 X. https://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B0167Q140U

This little camera produces near true colors right out of the camera on Automatic. I carry this camera everywhere in a sling pouch. See a few photographs below taken with this camera.

Just got a Lumix dmc fz1000. So far I am very impressed. I have always shot Canon, so this is a change for me. The Lumix comes with a Leica lens, which zooms from 24mm to 400mm and shoots very sharp photos. It has many features of a DSLR. It got great reviews. I think it will turn out to be a great walk-around camera.

I was in much the same position as you Dgutsy3 some months ago. Started looking at all the offerings from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji and Olympus. Finally settled on the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II with two kit lenses, 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ pancake lens and the 40-15mm F4-5.6 R lens. The similarity to my Nikon D7200 and D5100 in terms of functions and the small light weight of the body and lenses tipped the scale for me. Check this little gem out at your local camera store!

You're better off using the term "compact," since point and shoot sounds overly simplistic. Adorama had a Lumix for $697 yesterday, and you got a $200 gift card with that. I see that's it's up by $100, and the Gift Card is down to $150.

Google Best Compact Cameras for some choices. Basically, you're not going to buy anything that's bad.
