I think you all are looking at this the wrong way. Filter, Cameras, photographic equipment companies are not fishing for whales or even fishing at all. If you want to boycott do so against to those who do? just my 2cents worth.

I'm sure the "slim" means it's a thin profile filter, designed to reduce vignetting on the wider angle lenses.

Aren't Sigma lenses made in Japan?

Yes...they certainly are...whoops...gotta sell the sigma.

What brand of camera do you have?

Since I started my boycott about a year ago, I have not bought one product made in Japan. I am glad that I have my camera and lenses though and bought them years ago. The camera is perfectly fine (D70) so I am not going to upgrade it.
It is possible to live in America and not buy Japanese products. Chinese products is something else again :D.
I bought a Samsung flat screen TV recently (made in Korea) that is wonderful.
There is an online petition that is available for any others who might support my position about Japan.

ps. Yes I saw Tiffen advertised but figured with that cheap a price it might not be the one I want. Expensive lense, so splurge a little on the filter too.

You might want to rethink that flat screen purchase....South Korea eats Whales and Dolphins too.

I HAVE to say that I don't get the idea of worrying about dolphins who get caught in a net at the same time saying "Chinese products are something else again :) " when they are one of the biggest human rights violators on the planet!

You don't see that's a bit skewed?

I'll have to agree with rpavich on this one. It is very difficult to avoid all of the "bad" in this world.
Another question for you: what kind of car do you drive??? Many of the components, electronics, etc. in vehicles today are made in Japan or at least made by Japanese companies.
I also try to boycott anything made by Levi's as they are very much anti-gun and I am a big second amendment supporter: no Levi's or Dockers for me.
Also nothing from GE: they want to support Obama and all of the carbon credit goons. Do your best to make your point and support your causes, as we all should!!!

Stop jumpin on my post as if I was wrong by expressing my opinion on a subject he brought up. He also advertised his position by mentioning about his online petition that if you wanted to support his cause you could. All you guys that keep complaining that it is a photography forum yet criticizing anybody that comments are also expressing your opinions that have nothing to do with photography.. so drop it or ignore it.

I want to purchase my first circular polarizing filter for my Sigma 80-400 OS lense. I need a 77mm filter.
One minor problem, due to the brutal and continued Japanese killing of whales and dolphins I participate in a boycott of products that are made in Japan.
I have seen my options as B&W or Tiffen.
I have seen several different B&W filters on ebay from $80-$160 but don't understand the differences. I would spend the $160 if people recommend that.
Any help please.

Be aware that many companies market more than one line of filters. One might be "reasonably priced," the other quite expensive but with more care in manufacturing to get it optically flat and with better coatings. It isn't possible to say that all of [whatever brand]'s filters are either "junk" or "wonderful." One clue -- the good ones do cost quite a bit more. In recent years I've been replacing all my bargain table filters, or ones I thought were "good enough," with the best I can afford.

Hey Ray, It can't be done. If you boycott a country for moral purposes, it means no car, no clothes, no appliances, no food, NO CAMERAS, etc.

This is exactly the point I was trying to convey.

I don't know of any country that makes lens filters that doesn't participate in something that has a "moral" issue.

Hay, sinatraman, you should get your fact right. Yes the Eskimo kill maybe three or four whale a years for subsistence. They use every part of the whale. Not like Norway or Japan or the other whale hunting countries. By Alaska Law they must use oar powered boats to get there whales!

Slim filters are appropriate for wide angle lenses, but not needed for polarizers - the sky will not look right for anything shorter than a normal lens.

Unless you intend to use the polarizer a lot or in adverse conditions or on an expensive lens, there is not much point in spending a lot for a premium filter – Tiffen should be fine.

Finally, if you want to do something to stop whaling, send some money to Greenpeace like I have for the past 40 years. Boycotting Japanese products will make a bigger impact on you than it will on Japan or Nikon.

The only reason whales are hunted is the hunger of the Japanese people for whale meat. I'd say his boycott is directed correctly.

Polarizers are useful for many things other than making blue skies dark, cutting reflections is one, so definitely good to have slim ones
