I want to purchase my first circular polarizing filter for my Sigma 80-400 OS lense. I need a 77mm filter.
One minor problem, due to the brutal and continued Japanese killing of whales and dolphins I participate in a boycott of products that are made in Japan.
I have seen my options as B&W or Tiffen.
I have seen several different B&W filters on ebay from $80-$160 but don't understand the differences. I would spend the $160 if people recommend that.
Any help please.

I just bought a very nice B&W Cir PL filter in 77mm from B&H Photo.

It was a:

B+W 77mm (MC) KAESEMANN CIRC POL FILTER - BWKCPMC77

The Kaesemann means that it's sealed and no dirt gets in; a complaint with circ polarizers. It was 155.00

Without knowing EXACTLY what you are looking at we can't tell you which of your's is a good deal or not.

the market on ebay for filters is very competitive pricewise with B&H.
Ebay has a few sellers of filters that match yours in the same range.
One of them is:
B+W Kaesemann KSM MRC SLIM CPL 77 77mm Filter
Does the "slim" mean anything?
Thanks for answering.

Good for you. There is absolutely no reason to kill whales. Every product derived from them can be found elsewhere. It's not possible to avoid everything made in Japan, but do the best you can.

I'm sure there are countries all over the world that are doing shameful things, but we can't cut all of them out of our lives. Choosing to support a ban on whaling is a noble gesture. Publicizing it like this is also good.

Here is some reference info on filters.

Just do not buy a Tiffen, I just did, one of the worst mistakes I have made. I sure the the cheap one you can get on
Ebay could not be any more worthless. Money throw-ed away.

Since I started my boycott about a year ago, I have not bought one product made in Japan. I am glad that I have my camera and lenses though and bought them years ago. The camera is perfectly fine (D70) so I am not going to upgrade it.
It is possible to live in America and not buy Japanese products. Chinese products is something else again :D.
I bought a Samsung flat screen TV recently (made in Korea) that is wonderful.
There is an online petition that is available for any others who might support my position about Japan.

ps. Yes I saw Tiffen advertised but figured with that cheap a price it might not be the one I want. Expensive lense, so splurge a little on the filter too.

I'm sure the "slim" means it's a thin profile filter, designed to reduce vignetting on the wider angle lenses.

Aren't Sigma lenses made in Japan?

Yes Sigma is made in Japan but I bought it years ago, way before I knew about what the Japanese do to whales and dolphins, same with my Nikon D70.
I really would like to buy a Nikon VR 55-300 now, but I won't.

Selling the Sigma means buying a replacement that would come from Japan. Can't do it now :D.

I understand. I was just curious. I know some of the equipment is made in China and Thailand, but I have no real idea what.

You might want to rethink that flat screen purchase....South Korea eats Whales and Dolphins too.

I HAVE to say that I don't get the idea of worrying about dolphins who get caught in a net at the same time saying "Chinese products are something else again :) " when they are one of the biggest human rights violators on the planet!

You don't see that's a bit skewed?

Nikon is a Japanese corporation and some of the equipment may be made in other countries but the profits wind up in Japan.

Thanks for the eye opening link to that Korean story.
Unfortunately there is no TV manufacturing plant in the USA.
And yes China is a known human right violator of the worst kind.
But since you brought it up, it is impossible to live in this country and boycott Chinese goods. If American industry had not been decimated and all means of production moved to China, then we have another story. Then we could buy American, which I try to do as much as possible.
And not only is China a great human rights violator but Apple is a major contributor to the horrors that go on in manufacturing facilities in China.
And btw dolphins don't get caught in a net by the Japanese. They are trapped in the ocean, herded into a cove and slaughtered.
The documentary that showed this horrible slaughter of innocent animals won the Academy Award. It is called The Cove.
