Another reason it is a shame that Microsoft took the "Gallery" and other image processing (Raw & Jpg camera DL) out of Windows 10. Sometime all you need it a "windows" tweak (to a JPG or TIF), now I have to run Ps for all image processing (I don't use or like Lr).

Windows 10 has "Photos" which is a nice little editor and will do for many people. It has some nice features and its totally free.

There is one difference. When I "buy" software I have the right to use it as long as I want with no additional payments.

For that reason I think Adobe would be more concerned with good customer service in order to keep those monthly payments coming in.

These companies have to do quite a balancing act. Spend more on customer service and raise the price, which will cut into sales. Or, keep the price low, increase sales, which increases the need for customer service. The other possible effect of the rental plan may be that more people who would never spend $600 for a software package will jump at the $10 deal. That means many new users of some fairly complex software, which translates into a need for more customer service reps.

Probably the reason that Adobe almost requires that they be contacted by live chat instead of phone.

I am reminded tonight to be thankful for two things, I am retired, I've had just about every version of Windows except Vista.

Yeah, and I've got an old copy of Photoshop v4 around here somewhere - on 5.25" floppy disks. I no longer have the capacity to read them though. I retired my last floppy drive in 2002.

Here is the thing about the subscription plan that is not immediately evident to the naysayers. Photoshop has been aggressively updated and upgraded since CC. It is something that you can do when you streamline the delivery vehicle (online) and as a result increase revenue (adding more users). At the same time, the cost of a maintained copy of Photoshop AND Lightroom has dropped to $10/mo. Photoshop CS6 extended used to cost $1000, and if you were upgrading from the previous version it cost $200. The development cycle was a new version every 18 months, making the cost of owning an up to date perpetual license for just Photoshop $66/month.

I don't know about you, but I have spent $1000s on camera gear and computers and printers. $10/mo is pocket change - especially when you consider what you are getting. Photoshop and Lightroom is much improved over the previous perpetual license versions, and will continue to improve as time goes on. There is little value in continuing to use old, outdated software that is about to be orphaned. Especially when the cost is less than a once weekly stop at your local donut shop for a coffee and a donut. This is a silly argument - rental of software is just another way to pay for it. Companies need to derive revenue, and the reason they continue to develop their products is so that they can continue to survive. It's a good thing that the anti-subscription crowd is a tiny minority, or software companies as we know it would go the way of the floppy drive.

Besides, if you stop the subscription, you still have access to your Lightroom catalog, and your data is yours, so you are free to use any other company's product(s) to edit your files. I have only heard of one person, who happens to be having a problem with his computer/Adobe Tech support - that has actually decided against continuing the subscription. There may be others, but I'll bet that 98% of those who do the subscription never look back. Oh, and it is a pleasure to have updates and upgrades delivered to you the minute they become available. Makes the whole thing worthwhile.

Let me ask you - when do you plan on selling your '46 Studebaker? :)

when i can't get a response through email or chat or phone, i post my problem on the company's twitter. that gets me instant pointers to solutions, every time. each time i've had to do that, the issue has been resolved within a day or 2.

Almost all programs you "buy" you actually are buying a license to use the program, not buy the program.

I have found that Adobe's staff has been more than cooperative and helpful. Your adobe id is usually your email address.. . I've been on the photographer's $10/month plan, and couldn't ask for anything more..They are constantly updating and coming up with new features..much better than the "old days" of waiting 18 months for the latest version and shelling out around $200 USD.. I figure the plan is about equal to a meal for 2 at McDonald's in terms of cost, a real bargain from ADOBE!!

Of course, there are now wonderul alternatives to Adobe products. On1 Raw and Aurara. Not sure of your needs or profession. Both have layers. If you absolutely need PS, you have no choice.

I guess you disregard that Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom are the worldwide standard for graphics and photographic editing? That there is an incredible vareity of available plug ins, filters, tutorials, classes and books? And that professionals make their living with these two incredible tools?

Like I said ,blame the consumer. What part of I am not getting what I paid for ,did you forget?

I suggest that if you are looking to a low cast app, similar to Photoshop, look at "Zoner": https://www.zoner.com/ 30 day trial.

Gene, I think you know the answer to your last question. If I had a '46 Studebaker I would not be selling it.

As for the subscription software I do understand its value to people who need the most up to date software. And, for those folks it is a true bargain. I am all for Adobe using the best method to maximize profits as that is a corporation's primary goal.

I used to upgrade Photoshop ever other cycle. My first version was on 3 1/2 disks, I believe version three. My last version is CS five. What I found over the years is that while each new version had lots of new bells and whistles, fewer and fewer of the new features were of any interest to me. I believe that many, if not a majority, people who buy into the subscription not only won't use the new features but don't even have a handle on what we may call the basics. I also realize that a lot of folks do use the new stuff and will post that everybody should sign up, without knowing each individuals needs.

I am happy for the people who benefit from the new software distribution. I feel sorry for the people who subscribe because they are convinced they have to. Me, I'm happy with CS5, at least for now.

You will find the image editor has moved to the "Photos" app in Windows 10. Just click the pencil icon at the top. It even works with raw files. Probably the most elegant simple photo editor I have ever used.
