Geez, I tried to put this to rest already.
What is the matter with people here? I thought this was a photography forum. I simply stated a question about filters and asked for recommendations of non Japanese filters.
I believe in a cause,,, based on the replies I have gotten here, I guess I should be shot for it and if not shot then I should take up every cause in the world to justify the cause that I believe in.
Thanks to those who have confined their answers to my question.
Thanks to those who have expressed support for my cause.
I am done answering replies on this thread unless it pertains to filters.
I would appreciate it if this thread can be confined to filters as was intended by me at the start.

Hey Ray, It can't be done. If you boycott a country for moral purposes, it means no car, no clothes, no appliances, no food, NO CAMERAS, etc.

Hey Richard,
Should have stuck to filters, not moral issues. You opened this can of worms.

Richard, Just reading through this and wondering if anyone ever answered your question. (some did) I just went through choosing a circular polarazier, plus some ND filters and the choices and understanding it all was difficult even without your limits. I learned a few things: Circular and not linear for digital cameras. The higher priced filters usually have fewer color problems (don't cause color casts in the photo that need to be corrected by software). Thin usually means they don't have threads on the front side for attaching another screw on filter, like a ND filter, to the front of the polarizer. I have a friend who is a pro photographer and uses the less expensive polarizers and corrects color in photoshop. I ended up buying a nikon polarizer from B&H - which doesn't help answer your question either.

Thanks for getting back to the point.
After all the reading I have done and checking out some of the links that were posted in an earlier posting (Jerry, thanks very much for that) I am going with B&W. Seems to be the highest rated non Japanese filter I can get.

I still want to know why Norway kills Eskimos...lol Yes this is a forum about photography yes, but when you stated about the whales and dolphins you opened yourself up to a lot of criticism.. I think the fact that you boycott is a noble cause but misdirected but hey each to his own. The fact that this boycott bothers people is that in all common sense your boycott is impossible because although you refuse to buy products made in japan, I would bet my life savings you have so many products around you that you use with products made in Japan that if you had a Japan detector on you it would not stop blowing its whistle! Did you ever see how a cow is slaughtered? A pig? a chicken? The slave labor that comes out of all the Asian countries is horrible. So try not to be so defensive when people make the comments. Its no different how people think its ok to want to kill PEOPLE that hurt animals.. where is the sense in that? Just my two cents...lol

Since I started my boycott about a year ago, I have not bought one product made in Japan. I am glad that I have my camera and lenses though and bought them years ago. The camera is perfectly fine (D70) so I am not going to upgrade it.
It is possible to live in America and not buy Japanese products. Chinese products is something else again :D.
I bought a Samsung flat screen TV recently (made in Korea) that is wonderful.
There is an online petition that is available for any others who might support my position about Japan.

ps. Yes I saw Tiffen advertised but figured with that cheap a price it might not be the one I want. Expensive lense, so splurge a little on the filter too.
Since I started my boycott about a year ago, I hav... (show quote)

germany use to make great cameras; not sure about lenses.

I've noticed it isn't unusual for things to get off the subject of the original post in UH. I don't think Richard - Sports ever said we all had to support the cause he does in the way he does. If he had simply asked, "Who makes good filters other than Japan?" we would all have been asking, "why not Japan?"

B+W filters are made in Germany, and I don't think the Germans eat anything that would upset you except maybe sauerkraut. Slim filters are designed to prevent vignetting with wide angle lenses. They do not have threads on the front so you cannot attach anything to the front of the filter. That includes the adapter for graduated neutral density filters which you may want to use in the future. So, if you are not using a wide angle lens you may want to consider buying a non-slim filter. Rodenstock filters are also made in Germany are very fine quality - but you pay for what you get. Beware of bargains!!

I have to agree with the last sentence of this post. As to the first sentence, simply stated, we seem to have a propensity to follow the old adage, “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull sh** !”

On the other hand, the next time he might just ask who makes the best filters and ignore any brands he chooses to boycott. It is just a fact of life that any time you make a statement with political undertones, whether subtle or blatant, in an open forum like this, people are going to feel that it is not only their right but, their duty, to agree or disagree.

As to the first sentence, you just did. As to the latter, it might be their right but certainly not their duty to agree or disagree on this forum. After all, UH is supposed to be a photography forum.
