On a return trip from a sports competition in Louisville, they confiscated a 16" Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat Souvenir from my then young teen aged daughter.
I'm about to find out since I am half planning to take a large Manfretto Monopod on an upcoming flight. The cane idea may work, if not, I am always early enough that I go back out and leave it in the car.

Asking for a supervisor helps. My wife takes knitting needles that are pointed and one agent was going to toss them. The supervisor let them go through. 👍

I recently saw something which appeared to specifically deal with Knitting, crocheting etc. equipment. Noticed because my late Mother in Law who I was very fond of was a Knitting enthusiast.

Thanks for the tip. That will help me decide a lot.

By the way, I was told that if you actually "hand carry" it, it is counted as one of your 2 carry-ons. However, if you attach it to your backpack, then it's part of that piece.

Thanks for the tip Collie. Now you make me think twice to have a check in baggage and bring the tripod with me as suggested also by mike for night photography.

Can you attach your monopod/tripod to your carry-on some way? As long as it will fit in the overhead bin, you shouldn't have a problem.

In May of 2011, my husband and I went on an Avalon cruise. We started out in Paris, where we spent a day and a night. Then we took a high-speed train to Luxenbourg where we boarded our boat. We cruised down the Moselle and another river. Don't remember which one. One of the places we stopped was Hamburg, so may you can look that up to find the name of the other river. We got off at Nuremberg, but didn't go into town. We boarded a bus that took us to Prague. Prague is a beautiful city.

You can also use your monopod/tripod while cruising on the river. There are beautiful villages along the rivers, but some of them aren't near the edge. However, with the right lens and a monopod/tripod, you could get some very nice pictures. I didn't take anything with me and tried to hand-old my Canon 60D with a 16-135 lens. The next time we go on a river cruise, I'm going to take either a monopod or a tripod. I have a Manfrotto monopod that has 3 legs that pop out and it can be used as a tripod.

Enjoy your trip. Hope to see some pics.

I think they qualify as a part of a camera gear. But every person (TSA) sometimes has different moods. As suggested by quixdraw just bring in a printed copy of the TSA rule.

Good info. Do you suppose they qualify under camera gear in the eyes of TSA?

I always take a monopod and tripod on trips. I avoid any confusion by always packing them in checked luggage. Won't use them at the airport anyway. If luggage is lost they are inexpensive enough for insurance to cover and are readily available at most destinations. BTW, tripod in my bag, monopod in my wife's.

I have 3 lens to choose from to bring to my trip but I will only take 2 because of the load. These are: 16-35mm, 24-120mm and the 50mm 1.4. For sure I will bring the 50mm for night photography, but not sure which of the other 2 lens to bring. Any suggestions?

I can not advise you on a monopod, but on Prague - I have been living there 10 years and visited several times after commies gave up power. PS: remember, you can spend months on Prague pictures , but there are also other places just outside and trips cane be arranged, In the city itself the most valuable thing is a goooood shoe. This is a city to walk from one site to another. OH...start your training in beer drinking - it is as frequent as hand shake !!!

I have done that cruise. You will LOVE it. I found with a full frame Canon 5D III the lens used 99% of time was 24-105. The other was a 70-300 for castles and such on the shore as you pass by. I wished I had brought my 16-40 for interiors. Doubt you will need your monopod. A small tripod, maybe. (used on short sturdy leg length for night shots). I too brought a 50mm for night shots and never used it. Probably because I was too lazy. Have a GREAT time, I envy you.

I will be going to Europe next month and I just wonder if a Monopod will be allowed to hand carry to bring inside the airplane because I won't have a check-in baggage. Me and my wife will be going on a Viking River Cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg (Danube cruise) and will be spending the last 3 days at Prague. I am planning to do night photography. I will bring my D750 and 24-120mm lens and the 50mm 1.4. I need your advise for this trip and hoping that I won't mess up with my set-up. I have a small tripod which is about a foot high and it might also help. Thanks.

The max dimensions for most carry on luggage is 22 inches on most airlines; my big monopod will fit inside my carryon bag with the head removed. Why not do that?

My advice is to bring a tripod, not a monopod. There are a lot of opportunities in many of these cities; I just returned from 3 weeks in Prague, Vienna and Budapest. Used a tripod extensively for morning, night, and panoramic shots. A good travel tripod will fit inside a camera backpack; monopods are generally too long (although I have a small Gitzo that fits). I use custom Arca plates on the bottom of my cameras, and an Arca Nodal Rail Slide to balance the camera on the ball head. An AcraTech GV2 ball head supports the D750 and 24-120 quite well; and can be used for panoramas or as a gimbal head.

I highly recommend an ultra wide angle lens as well. The Nikon zooms are nice, but big, heavy, and expensive. The Nikon 20mm f/2.8 AF-D lens is small, light, and very affordable. Wider and faster than your 24-120, it would be a very useful addition.

For my D750, I use a ProMaster T525P carbon fiber tripod and Acratech GP2 ball head (which I use on bigger tripods as needed). The ProMaster is 14.3" folded, without the head. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued and replaced with a model that comes with a tiny ball head.

These days, I would probably get a Manfrotto Roadtrip Carbon. It comes with a ball head as well, but the tiny ball heads that come with travel tripods are, in my opinion, unworthy of a D750 with a zoom lens. I also have a Sirui T-005X; it's very compact and the legs fold over the ball head; which is too small for a D750 (I use my Olympus with it, and even then I'm pushing the ball head limits...which is why I use a nodal rail slide).

Hi,

Ive had problems taking a monopod onto the plane, but not a walking stick, weird. Now put the monopod in the check luggage.

We've been on quite a few Viking cruises and you will definitely enjoy this one . Prague is an exceptional city. The trip to Nuremburg is a bit daunting but very well handled , its a short trip and surprising content, wont spoil your surprise. Personally it was upsetting. As we left Nuremburg in the coach there was a street sign at eye level, Wientraubstrasse , that really hit me because its my maternal grandmothers maiden name.

If I remember correctly an additional trip to Terzinhem is offered , this was an internment camp not an extermination camp although most people in there died. Again the trip and guides are superb but I would suggest giving this a miss, its very upsetting at times. Two young men who latched onto our tour guides just sobbed their hearts out at the end.

You will definitely enjoy this trip.

Hi Hammer,

Thank you for the suggestion regarding the monopod.

Why is it daunting in Nuremberg? Were there any problems you encountered? This stirs my curiosity a bit but glad you had fun in spite of Nuremberg.

Thanks again.
