I will be going to Europe next month and I just wonder if a Monopod will be allowed to hand carry to bring inside the airplane because I won't have a check-in baggage. Me and my wife will be going on a Viking River Cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg (Danube cruise) and will be spending the last 3 days at Prague. I am planning to do night photography. I will bring my D750 and 24-120mm lens and the 50mm 1.4. I need your advise for this trip and hoping that I won't mess up with my set-up. I have a small tripod which is about a foot high and it might also help. Thanks.

I put my Monopod in my carry on bag and never had a problem with United Airlines. Check with your airline to be super sure and safe.

Check the TSA web site for allowed items.

My WAG is it won't be allowed.

Have a GREAT trip!

You would probably get a more definitive answer from TSA.

Monopods are allowed on domestic airlines. Some airlines from other countries will/may have a problem. In one week I will be traveling to Africa and am taking a cheap monopod just in case it is confiscated. Last year my tripod was almost confiscated by Argentine Airlines; finally, a security guard walked me from the security area to the airline's check in counter and handed the tripod to a crew member. It was locked in a storage bin on the plane and returned to me as I departed the plane.

https://www.tsa.gov/precheck In the upper right of the page you can search for items in question - I asked about a tripod.

Check or Carry-on
You may transport this items in carry-on or checked baggage. For items you wish to carry on, you should check with the airline to ensure that the item will fit in the overhead bin or underneath the seat of the airplane

I've never had a problem with mono or tri flying to/from Europe.

Took the Viking cruise from Nuremburg to Budapest last summer. I am sure you will really enjoy it.

Take some Duct Tape and stick it to the wing or if in doubt why not contact the airline? Or were you expecting an aviation expert to be on hand with complete and full knowledge of all the worlds airlines?
Prague is great place for photography but stay away from the girly bars. You have been warned!

It's funny, but a cane would be allowed on all flights, but an extended monopod would be questionable. Add a curved handle to the top, and make it into a cane.

The beginning and end of this video are very loud, but the narration is practically whispering, so start with sound low.

I have found that what's "allowed" depends more on the individual working the line and his/her mood that day. I think they make up their own rules. I've had things questioned when my total flight included several different airlines and several different flights. Some agents questioned items that others didn't even glance at.

Call the airline with any travel related questions, they are the experts, not us.

I'm taking a cruise next month so I checked the TSA website. It is allowed in carryons but I think I'll put mine in checked luggage.

Thank you all for the answers. I sure will give a second thought if I will bring the monopod. Under TSA rules, Monopod is allowed, but what about in other countries when I go back here in US.

Funny thing is that I did just that bought this handle attached it to a small Arca Swiss plate and away I walk. Have a cane too when me old knees need it.

Whilst working in West Africa I occasionally purchased a new golf driver or other club when on leave in the UK. Initially the stewardess would take it off me, upon boarding and then hand it to me once I reached my destination. Eventually they stopped doing this and was told that it had to go, despite my protestations, with the rest of the baggage. Unfortunately I had just bought a new Callaway driver approx. £460. When I arrived at my destination and the baggage carousel swung into action my brand new driver arrived in two pieces.
I suspect if your monopod will fit into your carry-on bag all should be good. Otherwise ???

I forgot to add to my post.

While TSA regs say you can have a monopod or tripod in your carry on, there have been some folks who have been told by an over zealous TSA agent that it could not go on board with them, checked baggage only. Let the flyer beware, anything can happen these days.

Next week I'm headed out west on United we'll see how I fare.

Happy Shooting and flying.
