About as bad as the early days of the Civil War. Militia uniforms, north and south tended to be gray, but some units wore blue to look like regulars.
I have read that at 1st Bull Run/Manassas the first two regiments to engage as massed units were both called the 1st Maryland and the Union regiment was in militia gray while the confederate regiment was in blue.
Now THAT would be confusing! What would be fun to follow ....... all the cloth was probably manufactured in the south, then shipped up north to be sewn into uniforms.
