About as bad as the early days of the Civil War. Militia uniforms, north and south tended to be gray, but some units wore blue to look like regulars.
I have read that at 1st Bull Run/Manassas the first two regiments to engage as massed units were both called the 1st Maryland and the Union regiment was in militia gray while the confederate regiment was in blue.
Now THAT would be confusing! What would be fun to follow ....... all the cloth was probably manufactured in the south, then shipped up north to be sewn into uniforms.

Nice work Bob. Makes me wonder though - what was the original shot of.
The original photograph was shot at a reenactment of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, in Greensboro, NC.

I love this effect. I am an amateur photographer but I've been a charcoal/ pencil artist forever. I like to use filters and blend modes to take my not so good photos and make them a work of art.

Good job.

Thank you GrfxLady. I tried crafting this effect for about a year straight and finally came up with a cocktail of plugins that achieved this effect. The charcoal/pencil sketches were fairly easy. The color pencil effect took a bit more effort. If you're interested in these, you might want to check out the retrospective I did with this effect from earlier this year. It can be seen here: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-358231-1.html

Thanks Randy. Rough textures for the rough rider (oh wait, those guys came considerably later).

No harm, no foul. I've done it myself in my wild youth.
Wild youth Hell. I've done it in my dotage the day I assigned a name to this topic. It "should" read 'Cavalry Melee'. Man, the things you see when you go back and proof-read!

Your whole series of these pics is great, but I really like this one with that little bit of color. Thanks for letting me view this today.

You're welcome Flyerace. I agree, the color adds a whole lot. It's a longer process getting there however.
