I concur with it is hard to take a bad picture out there. I strongly recommend two places to visit. Go to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is much less populated (tourists) and the photo ops much greater. You could easily spend two or three days at the multiple view points within the park. It is a bit of a run to Monument Valley but if you are a John Wayne / John Ford fan you will be well satisfied to have made the trip. Just north of the Monument Valley you will find Gooseneck State Park (UT). This is where John Wayne threw the empty bottle of whiskey into the river (Fort Apache). Enjoy your trip, it will be worth the drive.

Oatman AZ is worth going to. Its an old mining town as well as tourist trap. I'd also suggest the meteor crater north of Phoenix but maybe a little out of your way.

You may also want to drive thru the "Valley of Fire", just outside Las Vegas

I just pulled up photos from the Valley of Fire and they look awesome. I've put it on my list.

How accessible are these sites from the road?

It's actually mostly in CA but depending on when you go Death Valley is awesome. But not June-Sep.

Definitely 395 if you have the time. Check out the Mt. Whitney Portal Road and Alabama Hills at Lone Pine. From Lone Pine, you can go through Death Valley to LV. Just driving through Death Valley is an experience even if it is too hot to do anything else.

OK - being a CA native from Bay Area whose lived in LV for past 20+ here are my recommendations: From SF take coast Hwy 1 to Monterey - Marina and Aquarium, Carmel - town, beach and 17 Mile Drive from Monterey, Big Sur and San Simeon - Hearst Castle. In Las Vegas there's the Strip especially at night. Plus, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire and Hoover Dam. When you go to Grand Canyon - go south about 90 miles to Sedona which is absolutely beautiful. Check out Sedona on line, Oak Creek, Chapel of the Holy Cross and take a Pink Jeep tour of the Red Rocks. As other hoggers have suggested in Page, AZ the slot canyons - but that the photographer's tour & reservations are needed. Also, there is Horsehoe Bend. And there is Monument Valley. Know that this is a lot - so go online and check out places & then make list of what you MUST see and do. You didn't say when you were planning this trip for - if summer remember that it will be hot with temps over 100 degrees here in Vegas. Plan on shooting early morning & evening, not in middle of day. 10 days seems like alot of time but it will fly by. Private Message me if you have other questions and maybe we can meet up when you're in Vegas.

Walnut Canon, Prescott, Wickenburg, Hasiampa (SP) river (Upside down river), Copper Museum in Clarkdale, Indian ruins near Dead Horse Park in Cottonwood, NAU, Powell Observatory where the planet PLUTO was discovered, Take Route 66 instead of the freeway to Flagstaff. Slide Rock in Oak Creek Canon.

Many good suggestions and I'd totally endorse Death Valley (if not too hot), also Sedona when you hit Flagstaff. My suggestion as to your eastward travels across AZ would be to get off I-40 and take historic Rte. 66 from Topac (at the CO river). You'll see some great scenary, great photo-ops and hit such notable towns as Kingman, Seligman, Williams and Flagstaff (lots of great brew-pubs and cafes all along the way). Then east of Flagstaff, Meteor Crater, Winslow (yep, "Standing on the Corner", and Holbrook for Petrified Forest and Painted desert. Enjoy your trip!

If you care to drive this far the Joshua tree forest is on your way to Phoenix. There's lots of rock formations along the way that make interesting shots as well. Don't forget to get back from the damn, behind it seems best, to get a wide shot of the new bridge - it's spectacular.

They are very accessible, we drove right thru the valley to Lake Meade and continued over to the Hoover dam. Great trip!

The Best Loop:
Vegas to Zion to Bryce Canyon (you'll HATE yourself if you miss this one)
Then to Lake Powell, followed by the Grand Canyon. Back to Vegas - - or wherever.
-
Begging forgiveness is easier than asking permission - so one photo (of the million I took) posted of Bryce.
You CANNOT just 'saunter' down into the Grand Canyon !!!
But a trip to the bottom of Bryce (600 vertical feet) is survivable
-
IF you are just on a look-see - - the south rim of the Grand Canyon can easily be done in 1 day.

Bryce - from the Bottom Up
