is this in focus...

After a closer look I believe it is camera shake. There is ghosting on the top horizontal edge of the feeder and on the crown of the bird. It looks as though the shutter release was punched and not slowly depressed.
I have accumulated many a tail of adrenaline screwing up what was a perfect shot.
Bushido thanks for this - after reading what makes a bad photographer (a ritual moment of self castigation for being useless) - did some research and thought perhaps a combination of adrenaline and inappropriate ISO might compound camera shake - glad thats what you think -means I can fix it

hi
I would appreciate some guidance on whether this is in focus and how to tell when weeding good from bad ( my eyes say yes but dont trust them enough to believe pin sharp with out outside comment)
thanks in advance for time spent

One of my many mentors, when I was in television news,
told me, "it's either in or it's out..." Sorry, this one is out.

Fergal, Keep in mind when using a long lens not only are you increasing the size of the image, you are also increasing any lens movement equally. Normally when a subject is out of focus there is something that is close to being in focus. In your case everything was equally soft which made me look of other indicators of a problem. I think if you blow the image up you will see the ghosting I spoke of. They are fine lines that look like the start of a double image. Let me know what you discover.
Hi Bushido
I found some swirls on the wing - the crown and the top edge were fluffy. Saw odd vertical lines were they shouldnt be
The swirls were like some that have been on previous photos where I have really made a mess of things -delete button.
Ill have another go with some deliberately placed static objects ( not very exciting) to see if can get some better shots

When in doubt test, test, test. Good Luck, hope it works out for you.
thanks all for advice and time spent

i too think its it both a little shake and out of focus, many free to download programs will give you a good focus option which would improve it a lot. Graham (siamesecatmanuk)
