I know you asked SS but let me provide some suggestions. The sky and trees at the top conflict with the elephants for our attention. Our eyes are always draw to the brightest part of the image but when I get there I really don't see anything. The sky is blown out and the tree tops are cut off. The real subject is the elephants but there is no light. I can see why you tried to get both in the frame but it really does not work. The only real interesting element is the elephants. It is the subject matter. I would have tried to focus on them. But without good light, I am afraid they would not look very good. This is an unfortunate circumstance and there is no camera or crop solution. There is only another time.

Mark, thanks so much for finding and reposting on this thread but thanks even more for jumping in and helping roll the ball a little further along.
Basic composition is just so important I producing compelling images and to know if our compositions even work is pretty hard to know without the help of an experienced good composer.
Now, I can see I've got to go back and read this whole thread as I have no idea what images you guys are even talking about!! LoL
Thanks for the help. A very advanced and knowledgeable eye such as yours is invaluable to the learning process!!
Thanks....., SS

Thanks SS. Light and composition is sooo important. While most in here are preoccupied by gear, they are missing the most important aspects of better photography.

The goal of a photo is to tell a story, sometimes the picture has to fill the frame and as such the "rules" must be ignored.I hope these two photos, which make more sense when viewed as a pair. They violate all the rules of composition, but I will leave it to others to judge

I don't really see the second image (from page one) violating the rules of composition.
It has more than one C curve, it has leading lines (to the house), the house is in the right third and the artist is in the left third. And the horizon line is basically level.

Not the greatest subject, but, a composition with foreground and middle-ground features.

It's still pretty. I like the clouds and the waves against the rocks.
