Check out controlmynikon.com
I've been atusing their tethering program and find it quite helpful. You can change your shutter speed, aperture, even trigger the shutter with you mouse. You'll need the USB cable that you use to move your photos from your camera to your computer. I added a 10' USB extension so I can position my camera wherever I want.
I got it instantly for $20, which may have been a special deal...haven't checked lately.

I don't think it will work with the D3100. If I recall correctly the D3100 has no "remote control" function and, as far as I can tell, it's necessary to ControlMyNikon to work. Sorry.

Hi I used aUSB cable from my D70 to my laptop To shoot at Events for portraits. Remember to set up a destination folder.
You can't control the camera from the laptop this way, but you can see the photo in up size.

Hi, You can connect your D70 to a laptop with a USB cable. The camera will write to the camera card and send a photo to your computer. You will have to control settings on you camera.
I was an event photographer for about 15 years, and this worked for me in digital.
