Hi-Fi stood for high fidelity, so Wi-Fi would mean wireless fidelity. But that doesn't make sense. Back in the early audio day there were sound recordings that 'clipped' too many 'highs' and 'lows' (wax cylinder days?) and then came better technology. So was born hi-fi. Where the analogy breaks down is whether there ever was a time when radio wave signals ever were clipped. I suppose one could imagine the difference between Morse code and voice, but here I am sinking into the mud.
