Hey, Idaho isn't so bad. It borders Washington state too! Besides, my daughter and son in law live there. She has taken some beautiful pictures. 😃

It was just a joke. You should hear what folks say about Indiana.

Here is a consideration that has a direct impact on a posted images quality; The monitor that the image is being viewed on.

At this forum there is a difference in the quality of the image in the post and the image viewed using the download link. I can also state that there is a difference in the same image viewed with wide-gamut vs sRGB monitors. Both calibrated.

In a quick test, I viewed a recently posted cardinal, turkey, and hummingbird using the download link. In each case there is a noticeable improvement when viewed on the wide-gamut monitor. Also is the screen resolution to consider. The higher resolution displays will show considerably more detail than the older 1920x1080 monitors. In the mentioned images, each has a broader and more vibrant red and green dynamic range.

Maybe Mike has an old TFF monitor that is less than 100% sRGB.

Too many of the pics submitted to site are run of the mill photos of birds, birds, more birds, common landscapes of a favorite creek, lake, or sunsets. It would be much more interesting if more artistic or creative thought went into the photos submitted. Too many of the current crop of photos are boring, look at how much fun we had on our family vacation. Don't you remember those slide shows of your neighbors trips to the lake that he bored you with for an hour.

Come on people, you can do better. Step it up. Get those creative juices going and stop showing us that "beautiful mountain" you shot 15 years ago.

Then try somewhere else and leave us alone.
Try FotoBlur, it is full of "Wanna Be Artists" so full of themselves they are in danger of exploding. They think that poorly composed, out of focus, improperly exposed, motion blurred, muddy looking images with no real subject makes ART!!!! Some post an endless series of "street photography" that I could duplicate by giving anyone a camera and tell them to take random pictures. Others keep making changes to the same set of images and reposting.
Hidden among all this are some good photographers who are not full of Artistic BS. But many of them have been influenced by the site and process their image to fit in, and ruin them or turn them into "almost" a good/great image.

To top it off the site has poor image quality and costs you money to belong. I regret the $29.95 I paid for a 6 month membership, which will not be renewed.

As others have written, we have a very wide variety of talent on here as well as a wide variety of folks based upon experience. While I would agree that not every photo posted is an award winner, they did make the person who took them happy enough to want to share. My personal policy is to not comment on something that I don't care for and to give praise when I feel it is due. There are many many on here who are much better at photography than me, and I enjoy seeing their work. I limit my comments, mostly, to the positive, and I enjoy being here enough to be here almost every day!

Mike,
There are sections "For Your Consideration" and "Photo Critique Section" where one can place works that are not "run of the mill", as you put it. Most of the other sections contain images that are mere captures of what someone saw while walking around, similar to your vacation photos.

To me it's interesting to see what others see. The sections I mentioned contain images on how they see what they see.

So, now that you might be aware of the sections containing more than vacation photos, perhaps you can post some of your work so we can share your visions of the world as you see it.

I too enjoy seeing what photos others post, regardless of their "quality". I am definitely an amateur but am constantly trying to improve my technique and train my eye to recognize a good photo opportunity when it presents itself. As I see it, UHH is a PHOTOGRAPHY forum. I cannot imagine why anyone would join this group unless they either wanted to learn or wanted to teach and what good would it do without photos great, good, not so good and really bad to compare, critique and learn from? Lets all learn to play nice with each other.

I'm new to UH and am a novice photographer..but I have to chime in here.

One of the things that attracted me to the UH forum was the camaraderie and the supportive positive responses to posts. While surfing the forums before signing up, I had the impression that Ugly Hedgehog is a group of folks who want to share their passion for photography who like to learn from one another and inspire others to pick up a camera and be creative. What I saw was a group who were willing to teach by example and suggestion and who appreciated everyone's efforts, be they experts or novices...or even just really bad photographers. I've seen some fairly 'boring' pics and some truly spectacular ones and a lot in between. I've learned a great deal from suggestions and comments and I've enjoyed the conversations that have little to do with photography but range from a love of classic cars to identifying wildflowers. Personally, I like that folks enjoy their summer vacations and want to share with us!
I'm thrilled when a really great photo is posted in a way that helps me learn how to accomplish the same effect...I'm equally grateful that members post their 'boring' mountain photos and I hope they will always feel free to do so.
I am an artist, I teach creative classes and have curated exhibitions...so while I may not know photography I am familiar with the creative process. Everyone is creative, not everyone is talented in every genre...what is boring or mundane to some eyes might be a great achievement to the person who took the photo. The technical aspects of photography are intimidating and confusing. Rather than complain of boredom perhaps you could share some of your work and help those of us who are learning to understand the process?

Yes indeed. My photos are decidedly mediocre at best, but I'm working on improving, and I greatly appreciate the knowledge gained here and seeing other's work. In response, I feel that I have an obligation to contribute positively to the forum when I can. Does the OP feel any similar obligation?
