Too many of the pics submitted to site are run of the mill photos of birds, birds, more birds, common landscapes of a favorite creek, lake, or sunsets. It would be much more interesting if more artistic or creative thought went into the photos submitted. Too many of the current crop of photos are boring, look at how much fun we had on our family vacation. Don't you remember those slide shows of your neighbors trips to the lake that he bored you with for an hour.

Come on people, you can do better. Step it up. Get those creative juices going and stop showing us that "beautiful mountain" you shot 15 years ago.

Maybe you should contribute something for critique yourself, complaining of work by others without backing up your credibility sounds more like whining.

It does make them feel better as for myself it is a hard thing to get what I call artistic. But when I see what they post I click into them and quickly click out. No harm done either.

Now that you have challenged us --- lets see some of your stuff.

I noticed you have not posted any photos on here.

I second this.

As I was in the process of typing a response below, this was posted and it echoes my sentiments exactly.

I agree with both Idahomike as well as with Paulrph, the majority of photos are bland, unimaginative and/or interesting only to the poster. But then again, I don't have to sit and study them, I can quickly continue my search elsewhere with no harm done.

Seems like a lot of negativity on this site, but it's probably just a few folks. Just always surprises me.

As others have written, we have a very wide variety of talent on here as well as a wide variety of folks based upon experience. While I would agree that not every photo posted is an award winner, they did make the person who took them happy enough to want to share. My personal policy is to not comment on something that I don't care for and to give praise when I feel it is due. There are many many on here who are much better at photography than me, and I enjoy seeing their work. I limit my comments, mostly, to the positive, and I enjoy being here enough to be here almost every day!

Mike,
There are sections "For Your Consideration" and "Photo Critique Section" where one can place works that are not "run of the mill", as you put it. Most of the other sections contain images that are mere captures of what someone saw while walking around, similar to your vacation photos.

To me it's interesting to see what others see. The sections I mentioned contain images on how they see what they see.

So, now that you might be aware of the sections containing more than vacation photos, perhaps you can post some of your work so we can share your visions of the world as you see it.

Maybe this request would be better served with a "composition samples" section! I agree most pictures don't really follow many of these guidelines!

There's creativity, and there's creativity; it's all in the eye of the beholder. What I've noticed here is that there is a huge amount of technical know-how about photography in general, gained through long years of experience. Those pictures of birds, landscapes, sunsets, etc. are all very well (and for many) beautifully composed, exposed and rendered. Again, it's because there's a lot of Old Geezers (like me; I'm 67 in 3 months) doing something they truly enjoy, and have for a long time, and it shows in the photos I'm seeing here. If our stuff isn't exciting all the hipsters, so what? They should take a closer look and learn something well worth learning. Myself, I have to admit to being somewhat intimidated here. I was hit, early on in my exploring UHH, just how little I actually know about photography, both the techniques and (especially!) the equipment. But this is a swell place to hang out and pick up valuable info, so here I am. If I have any ability, what little there is revolves around retouching. Perhaps some of you may have visited the Library of Congress photo collections? They're extensive and unfortunately in pretty rough shape, too. Most of them are glass-plate negatives well over a hundred years old, with a hundred years worth of scratches, fingerprints, dust and emulsion stains built in (and high-res scanned into the library as is). The photo I'll be attaching was taken in 1913, and looked every day of it. I offer it as a sample of an area of photography that I enjoy, and as a tribute to all old soldiers everywhere as we approach Memorial Day, 2016. I guess maybe from here I ought to head over to the Introduction page and properly ID myself. I did want to let Idahomike and others who may think UHH is somehow lacking in "style", "artistry", "creativity" or wh**ever: It's there, in spades. Just take a closer look.

The most of us are everyday photographers who enjoy seeing what others have done, too. Since we haven't seen any of your work, we don't know if your photos are worthy of merit or not. Maybe they're fantastic--maybe they aren't so good, either. The great bulk of us are happy here, so, instead of trying to make us into something we aren't and don't really care to be, I suggest two things: 1, show us how good you think you are, or, 2, go to another site that meets your apparent standards. Either way will be fine with us.

So, out of 8 posts so far, two have been to complain about or criticize the photos of others. Couple that with no posts of personal work, nor a link to where such work might be viewed, and I'm left with the distinct feeling that UHH has gained yet another inflated ego. Lucky us. 🙄
