I think THAT comment sums up where you stand on a lot of things, Roger.

Packing, not packing, Scared, Not scared, Whatever; You should have the right to carry a gun if you wish too. I spent 30 years as a Police Officer and most of the time was required to carry a gun. When guns are prohibited, only bad guys will have them ;;

That actually happened in 2009.

In a Portland, OR study of 100 deaths in residential houses caused by the discharge of the owner's firearm, 4 were home invaders, and 12 were homeowners who were disarmed by the attacker and shot with their own guns. The rest were residents of the home that died either by suicide or accidental discharge of the gun, a majority percentage of those being children. 96% of the deaths were homeowners or their family. Only 4% were home invaders. The stats do not speak well of gun ownership for self-defense as a viable alternative to nothing, statistically safer.

Those stats do not take into account, the times that guns are succesfully used WITHOUT someone dying. When we lived in town, a man was trying to get into our house. My wife, who was home alone, pointed a pistol at him through the window. Apparantly, he is allergic to 357's, because he left. Police showed up 20 minutes later.

Wow....this thread makes me glad that I live where I live.

The town I live in is small by all your standards I'm sure and I've NEVER felt in any danger ever in the 8 years that I've lived here.

I've left my house unlocked more times than I can count, my car isn't locked, and my garage doesn't have a lock.

I came from SoCal and when I came here after living there; (locking EVERYTHING ALL OF THE TIME because of the high crime rate), I saw wallets sitting in plain view on car seats, keys in the ignitions with the windows rolled down...and nobody touched anyone's things.

I couldn't believe that there was a place in America where there was this much trust among people. Stealing from your friend or neighbor is unheard of here.

It's changed some but not a lot...

I own several guns and don't "pack" any of them...there is no need.

Rpavich,

I rarely lock my doors at home or my car when at home either. I know most of my neighbors on a first name baseis. The crime rate in our county is low because most folk know there is a firearm behind almost every door here. I too lived in West-by-God for a while. No matter were you live the potential for an incident to happen is the same in the country or the city. The difference is the frequency of the event. On the AT many people have died because they were not prepared for big wildlife encounters. Oh AT (appellation trail)

I think you meant to say "APPALACHIAN TRAIL". I hear those dualing banjos playing now. LOL. There was a time when portions of that trail were dangerous either by locals or indiginous wildlife, but for the most part, it's been pretty trekked over now by so many city folk that they probably have asphalted most of it. Just kidding.

I was thinking the same thing. When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns. I try to go to the range three times a week. I usualy have five guns with me. I am one of the people that liberals like to hate. Oh well, this battle will go on for ever.

Dear Blake,

See my post above. We do not differ on this, except that if I weren't afraid of bears, I'd not worry about wanting to carry a gun, so it is fear after all. It's the Rambos I'm talking to, not those who run the risk of being threatened by wild animals. A .38 is OK for killing people and small animals, but I'd rather have serious firepower for bigger animals.

Cheers,

R.

Ello mate,
I was an ambulance man for may years. I took my share of folk to the hospital that were either shot by or killed by " Just a 22 " but your .45 would work on dem der bears

Cheers,

Blake

A shame when it has to come to that.We cant attack those who break into our homes.

Going by what's been seen and heard on the news it seems to have come to this. If a burglar enters your home, help him out. If you arrive home and find him there, help him get the goods he wants. And by all means ensure he has a safe departure. If he gets hurt on your property he may sue you. And the real kicker is he will likely win the case. If you injure him you are now going down as the bad guy.

We often go to our local 2,200 acre forest reserve to shoot photos. Lately there have been many coyote attacks on dogs. Some have been on leashes with their owners. One man had to wrestle a coyote off of his dog and then carried his dog back to the parking area. People are fearful that the coyotes will attack humans next.
Firearms are prohibited in the reserve (with or without a permit). In this area you are not allowed to kill coyotes. People are upset as many homes border the reserve.
We have taken many photos in this reserve and are disappointed at this new turn of events and concerned for those living close.
I guess they are "uncivilized American coyotes!" But seriously, while taking photos be aware of your surroundings.
