I think your crop is really good, bigfoot. I too have been criticized for my critique and I feel it wouldn't be fair if we didn't hear form both sides.

The Crystal City Mill is one of the most photographed places in Colorado. It is difficult to get a really good picture of it since it sits in a narrow canyon-it doesn't get good dawn or sunset light. I took this photo on a very overcast day, so I tried to frame it without much sky. Lizard Lake is a small lake on the way to Crystal City, I liked the reflections, so I took a shot. Anyway, I would love some feedback on composition, exposure, etc. Both shots were taken with a Canon T1i with Canon EF 17-85mm F4-5.6 lens.

P.S. It was never actually a mill, it was something of a power plant to produce compressed air to run mining equipment.

And, Gessman, you are making me blush! But I'm happy to get out there and do it for a distinguished gentleman such as yourself. As for Second Hand Lions, I have seen that movie, at least three times. I can picture you as Robert Duvall, or do you see yourself more as Michael Caine?

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable.

Which one? Sort of a mix, I'd think. I should, but I'm not going very quietly, as I'm sure you've noticed. When younger, I might have gone to Arabia swinging a sword but with manners, timidly and yet effectively. Now, as it was later with them, I'd probably fit more into the Duvall role minus all the heroics in the bar-b-que joint. I'm having a hard time turning loose of my youth. I walk around like I own the place, and don't hoe a garden. Having three sons keeps me on my toes. And, I might be somewhat inclined to wake up in the middle of the night in a pond thrashing an imaginary opponent with a stick, but perhaps in a pair of pajamas, and timidly and apologetic, uttering something like, "this is going to hurt me more than it's going to hurt you." You know that one, I'm sure.

Not at all, I'm enjoying my conversations with you. You do paint quite the picture....I think we all want to think that we could live up to the heroics of Duvall's character, but I imagine most of us would be much more timid in a pair of pajamas than you. I would imagine that you, as yourself, may be more of a character than Duvall was in the movie .

I don't want anyone to feel like they can't voice their honest opinion-just don't make me cry  . I really do want to hear from people who have legitimate criticism, it's how we learn and improve.

I would never intentionally make anyone cry. I really like this place and feel we all should have our opinions heard without being rebuffed for not liking something.

You know, probably not. I'm really a pretty quiet guy, somewhat introverted and mild mannered, not very inclined to be very demonstrative. Earlier was a little different matter but earlier seems to be behind me now. I come out a little more here than anywhere else and this is the only online interest I'm involved in. I suppose it's the luxury of quasi anonymity and the knowledge that I can pull the plug and walk off if it turns into something I'm not interested in. I think that photography is pretty much a hobby for solitary people, don't you. Seems like it's always been that way for the duration of my span of cognizance. Pros, perhaps not so much, but it's so time consuming that it doesn't really leave me much time to cause much trouble.

I have been hearing about the, what is it, Colorado National Monument? Have you done any shooting there. I think it's somewhere around Glennwood Springs, isn't it?

Lets be completely fair here, expressing a difference of opinion is not critisizing. I too like Bigfoot's crop, I simply had a difference of opinion, I like the extended depth that the sky and the close rocks provided. It's all good

Gessman, I have indeed done some shooting on the Colorado National Monument. Lots of interesting rock formations and canyons. I think it would be best in early morning light, I've tried it at sunset and there's just too many shadows. It's right on the western edge of Grand Junction. If you come this direction on I-70, it's about a five minute drive from the Fruita exit. Actually, I love the drive on I-70, there are so many great places to get off and take some photos. Anytime I drive to Denver it always takes me at least two hours longer than it should because I have to stop at every rest area in Glenwood Canyon and burn through a memory card.

And, I agree, this is something of a solitary persuit in practice, but I sure do enjoy gabbing about it after the fact.

Hey, my friend. When are you going to do that shot at the Tabernacle we talked about? I've been wondering if you were okay. I've envisioned you lying on the sidewalk in front of the Tabernacle with that empty whisky bottle in front of you and the cops coming up and hauling you away. I've been tempted to put out an APB for you. Did you change your mind on that?

Thanks for the info on the monument. You're really in a prime jumping off spot where you are, Moab just down the way, Arches, Bryce, and then Monument Valley all within a fairly short drive. You're really lucky. Of course, I guess you can only do that so much, eh?

And, yep, talking is good. I've noticed, there's not as many forum members in this region for the concentration of photographers here in Colorado. It may catch on later. I guess we'll see. Maybe they're a little more like me than I am at this point, quiet and solitary. :-) I didn't think you were ever going to say anything at all. You're coming around some, huh?

Looks like a pretty cool place to do some shooting. In the bottom one, is that Grand Junction in the valley? Nice panos by the way. How many wide is that bottom one?

I love the first photo and the iguana. I think the second photo could use a little more color. I also like the cropped version. You did a fantastic job as far as I am concerned, but I don't know what the others on this website do. So, I like them but listen to the experts. LOL

At last count, yours would be the 4,973,565,741st shot of the mill and by golly, it's about as nice a one as I've seen. The lake is a little more obscure but equally as nice to gaze upon. You do good work. Lovely.

Gessman, are you among the 4,973,565,741 (hee, hee)? I know it's been done to death, but I just had to try it! Thank you for your kind words, sir.

That is the wonderful thing about photogtaphy, there are 4,973,565,741 different pictures of the same mill and maybe 41 of them have a truly unique angle, its all good. What matters is that the photographer is proud of his or her own work, and remember, there are far more people who have never seen a picture of the mill before (including myself) so for them this may as well be the only picture of the mill in existance and its a good one!
