Really like the first shot, maybe just crop the sky out, I really liked that you filled the foreground.. Second photo has great color on the hillside, but sky seems to tone the photo down, doesn't add anything in my opinion, Maybe wait for a better sky if you ever get back that way.. Nice Shots....

I can appreciate the difficulty of even getting there as I have been to Crystal Mill many times, both in summer and winter. The advantage of the winter photography is the Aspen trees - the leaves are totally yellow by this time and make for really fantastic photography!

Aside from the difficulty of actually getting there, this is one of the most photographed places in Colorado! Not only is this building most unusual it is the only one standing since W.W.II. The inhabitants around this area decided that, if the Japanese were to invade our country that this area may be one of the first to be invaded because of all the Gold and Silver mines in the area. Every standing building except the old mill were torn down. Just a little history to go along with the photo.

Hi, might be good to crop both top and bottom. The little bit of sky doesn't add and detracts a little from the subject. At the bottom, the rocks intrude upon the subject of the photo with their light color and negligible interest. They are also out of focus, but you could leave a third of them in the pic. Indeed the slow shutter speed used without a tripod has put the whole scene out of focus. While you obviously wanted the water to look creamy, the structure and trees show that the camera moved. Your composition is good overall, however, so your "eye" is working just fine! Just make sure the main subject is sharp when it should be as in this case. You might want to make the vertical dimensions closer to what most monitors can encompass without the viewer having to scroll. Closer to 700 than to 800 px.

I have to disagree. What you would loose by cropping out the tree tops and the rocks at the bottom would far outweigh anything you would gain. The teqnique used here makes excellent use of the wide angle aspects of the lense rendering great focus from a few inches to infinity. I'm betting the focus was only set to around a few feet in manual and the camera was near to the ground, I would also be suprised if some sort of camera rest if not a tripod was used. I have to say that you must have better eyes then I do because the focus looks fine to me. The framing is excellent, the colors are vibrant, and the ribboning of the water is dead on. All in all a picture worthy of framing.

I totally agree with you... I went back & looked several times & it still lookes right to me! Keep up the good work!

Hi fstop, thanks for your feedback. I agree about the picture of the lake. When I had it up on PS, I thought it was a nice shot, but not exceptional and bigfootmm is right it does tilt to the left. Plan on trying the shot again one day as Crystal is only about a 2 hour drive from me.

At last count, yours would be the 4,973,565,741st shot of the mill and by golly, it's about as nice a one as I've seen. The lake is a little more obscure but equally as nice to gaze upon. You do good work. Lovely.

Gessman, are you among the 4,973,565,741 (hee, hee)? I know it's been done to death, but I just had to try it! Thank you for your kind words, sir.

Naw. I'm a lazy photographer. I buy real long lens and try to sit on my front porch and shoot, like them two ol' geezers in that movie Second Hand Lions. Did you see that one? If not, you should. When they told me how far I'd have to walk I said, "okay, I'll just wait on some gorgeous blond from the west Colorado beach country to do and then..." As for, "done to death," I don't think I could get too much of it. It's a very compelling scene and you did it very well.

I see nothing at all to critique!
It's a stunning set of photos and definitely something to be proud of... and FRAME!

Thank you all for your kind comments! Just makes me want to get out and take some more :)

And, Gessman, you are making me blush! But I'm happy to get out there and do it for a distinguished gentleman such as yourself. As for Second Hand Lions, I have seen that movie, at least three times. I can picture you as Robert Duvall, or do you see yourself more as Michael Caine?

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable.

Which one? Sort of a mix, I'd think. I should, but I'm not going very quietly, as I'm sure you've noticed. When younger, I might have gone to Arabia swinging a sword but with manners, timidly and yet effectively. Now, as it was later with them, I'd probably fit more into the Duvall role minus all the heroics in the bar-b-que joint. I'm having a hard time turning loose of my youth. I walk around like I own the place, and don't hoe a garden. Having three sons keeps me on my toes. And, I might be somewhat inclined to wake up in the middle of the night in a pond thrashing an imaginary opponent with a stick, but perhaps in a pair of pajamas, and timidly and apologetic, uttering something like, "this is going to hurt me more than it's going to hurt you." You know that one, I'm sure.
