The D500 will only use Nikon batteries. I have a 2 Promaster batteries that I use interchangeably with Nikon batteries in my D810 and D750 - they do NOT work in the D500.

Took delivery on 4/21, got home and inserted one and it did not work. Called Service Photo, my dealer, they said they had heard rumors but with my camera, it was the first they had actually seem. Said they called Nikon which confirmed the fact.

Thank You fot your response. I am sure the 3rd party folks, will catch up. In the mean time when I do get my D500 I will purchase a couple exta Nikon batteries.

I would not use a third party battery on any new Nikon Camera while under warranty. After the warranty, OK. You're only talking a savings of $20 or so. Not worth it for a $2000 new camera. IMO.

Very smart advice!

That totally sucks!!

My D7100, D750 and D800 all use the same battery as the D500. Fortunately I have 3 OEM's and 3 Wasabis so I will get through this without having to pay the inflated Nikon price.

Its NOT a joke, I ordered my D5 and they sent me a shipping date, The next day they sent me a new date saying the camera was recalled, and explained the prerelease recall.

then when I contacted NIkon about the release they said something about not being able to pay with monopoly money .

so I dont think I'll ever be getting that d5 . so now Im waiting for the D6 to come out,

That's strange. I've never had a store refuse Monopoly money. Of course, I can't recall ever offering it. :D

For those of you that have the Nikon D500 already. If you have 3rd party batteries that you have used in your prior camera, have you tested to see if they work in the D500...This is of course assuming that you have a camera that uses the same model battery.. TIA..

I'm a Canon guy but just for reference I did try some 3rd party batteries once and was very disappointed. The ones I used swelled during use as they heated up. When the battery was depleted I couldn't remove it because it had swelled tight. I've never had that with Canon batteries. So, regardless of brand, I always recommend using OEM batteries.

I tend to agree. Not trying to offend anyone, but if I spend $2 grand on a camera, I'm not scrimping on the batteriesÂ….

What's a "wasabi" except in Japanese cooking?

In the US, it's usually just horseradish and green foodcoloring.

It's also a brand of cheap camera batteries.

I prefer "less costly." :D

Thanks, Jerry. Less costly as in 2 Wasabi batteries and a charger for less than one Nikon battery.

I understand concerns about what Jimmya experienced but I've used Wasabi BATTERIES in 3 cameras without problems.

I've had one experience with wasabi SAUCE and I'll never do that again. :-D

I think you might be right. While I would have no problems buying third party batteries for a five year old P&S camera, I would probably not do the same for a new and expensive camera. I am even rethinking my battery choice for my Pentax K-50. It has an adapter so you can use generic AA batteries. Maybe I should dump the cheap "Thunderbolt" brand Nimh rechargeables that I buy at the local Harbor Freight tool store
