I am thinking about replacing my 7D with the new model. I got it about 10 months before the 7D II came out. Take all kinds of pictures sports, landscape, wildlife, portraits. I don't use it for video at all. I am going back and forth. Some reviews make me think "do it" then I will read another than makes me think "Not worth it." Any feed back from people who have used both would be grateful.

As much as I love my 7D mk II, I'm very interested in the new 80D that's just released as it has more F/8 focus points, and a revamped AF system. That's a big deal if you shoot moving objects with a long lens and possible extender. The 80D may be a good "interim" camera until the 7D mk III is released-and it costs less than a mk II. Just a thought.

You might also take a close look at the 80D.

The 7D Mark II has some great features and a better focusing system, the 80D has WiFi and android pairing, more megapixels, and an upgraded focusing system as well... also touch screen...

I don't know much about the 80, but keep in mind that even if the focus system is better than the 70, the 7ll is only a year old and a camera takes more than a year to develope. The 80 uses one 6 processor to run the entire camera. The 7 also uses the 6 but has TWO of them. One just for the AF system. There won't be big gains in the AF system till the new cameras come out using the 6+ processor or whatever it is that's in the new 1Dxll.
I would not not expect many gains in the 80.
It's also not just about low light focus but about the quantity of cross and dual-cross points and how the processor is configured to handle the focus situations.
I don't know if the 80 has the 5 cases for AF found in It's big brothers for action. Just more to consider and research out. ;-)

I went from the 7D to the 7Dii soon after the upgrade came out. Liked the original model and thrilled with the ii. Can handle much higher ISO's and is a good complement to my 5D3.

I have the 7D not the MII. So cannot compare. But does the 7D work for you? What are you seeing as a major failure of it?
If we chase technology we will never catch up.
I try to learn all my camrea can do and use it. I will wait 2-3 generations because then you see fantastic improvement. For example the 80D has some better things than the 7D MII. It is a decision of yours and if you have money to burn go ahead. Personally I would get a good L lens I don't have before trading up. Then wait a couple more generations.

I have both the 7D and the 7DII. I upgraded because of the improved focusing system. I do a lot of dog sports and the improved tracking and high ISO support has let me shoot where I couldn't get shots on my 7D. With that said, you need to look at the features you use and need. If the 7D still meets your needs, I would stick with what I have.

I had the 7d and upgraded not a bit sorry. so much more built-in,interval timer, better ISO etc etc. I would def say if you have the $ go for it. The only thing I wish it had is WiFi but canon say's because of the mag metal body the signal can't penetrant it. And touch screen but i never had a camera with one so I don't Miss it no big deal to me.learning curve is is in Dept but easily learned enjoy it if you go for it I have.

The 80D keeps being thrown into the mix. The 7D MK II and the 80D are aimed at different audiences. If video is of interest to you, touch screen, articulating screen, wireless- the 80D may be your best choice.

The 7D MK II still has the better AF system if moving subjects are your target. The 7D MK II EOS iTR AF, Intelligent Tracking and Recognition Auto Focus. ITR attempts to detect the locations of faces and focuses on these in the scene or alternately it can identify subjects of a particular color such as in sporting events for example. ITR was first inroduced in the 1Dx but has been greatly improved in the 7D MK II. The 7D MK II have a more heavy duty build if you are going to be outside under adverse conditions. The 7D MK II has the higher continous shooting frame rate.

Before I upgraded to the 7DII I had the 7D and remember how disappointed I was when I took pictures at an indoor horse jump competition where the lighting was not very good. If I'd have had the 7DII at the time I'm convinced my results would have been better!

Definitely worth the trade-up. Not only are the autofocus and frame rate significantly improved, but for me the higher DR and lower noise of the 7D2 would be key. I had a 7D for many years and loved it, but the noise at ISOs above 800 limited my low light photography. I moved to a 5D3, but I intend to purchase a 7D2 in the future to supplement it for sports photography.
