Welcome to the Hog! I know what you mean. Very often I picture the desired outcome of the photos I take, but reality has a way of barging in on expectations. There are times I come back from a shoot and don't have any photos I plan to print. Ansel Adams didn't hit a home run every time either!
Aloha Bill and welcome to UHH. You've come to a great web site that you can learn. As you have already seen above by cropping your photo you have a much better one. If you're not afraid of being critiqued then post some photos here and you'll receive much more information. The main thing here is to go out and have fun and enjoy.
Jim, I didn't say it was a great picture, I look at the quality of a picture before anything else and the quality and color are very good, that's just me.

Ernest, you really think it's a "very good picture"? In my opinion that tree to the left is very distracting and substantially degrades the image's impact. But that's just me.

Last Thursday I took 150 pictures of an eagle on her nest. Haven't looked at them in Lightroom yet, but already eliminated about 25 by reviewing in camera. Next up will be to get one or two good shots sitting on the nest (eliminate those where her head is cut in half by twigs, etc) and then see if there are a couple with her standing and hopefully one of her flying off the nest. So my hope is to get between 4 and 10 pictures. I think the estimates you have seen from others is pretty close. Bud
Hey Bill. welcome to the family!! The crop sure made it a better shot. But the first one was good too!! I shoot a lot and keep the ones I like even if they are not the greatest. Just depends on you and what you like. Some of the ones I keep are pretty bad, but they are a good memory for me to look back on.:) There will be a lot of pictures coming out of your camera. Keep what you like. Because you can't always do it over again!!
