Hi, my name is Bill, I'm not a professional, but I sure like photography. I have one question when I go on a photo shoot I will take anywhere from 250 to 500 pictures (wildlife) and if I can get 5 great shots out of this group, I feel like I had a good day. So my question is does that sound about right or I'm I just a lousy photographer?

Welcome to the Hog! Now, fasten your seat belt! You just asked a question that requires an opinion. By page 2 it will have spawned a cyber fist-fight and by page 3 it will have spun off into something totally unrelated to your question! Just like the questions that don't require opinions! Just the same, the Hog is a great place to spend some time and to learn things in the process. Have fun! Interesting shot, BTW.

It depends on what I shoot. I shoot mostly nature and landscape - have not done it for pay, for a number of years. The more "candid" shots, like birds or other animals that are normally in motions and more spontaneously taken, the fewer shots I keep. Landscapes are more carefully planned and thought out, so I keep a far greater percentage of those.

Welcome Bill,

I have a solution to your shooting - get more equipment. More lenses = more good shots. Or, ML=MGS, this is an old family formula garnered from my Dad.

What he said

Welcome to the Hog. For me, it depends on what I'm shooting as others have said. If I'm shooting Birds in Flight or a dirt bike competition, where I'm shooting High Speed (10 fps) I will end up tossing many more than I keep. If I'm sight seeing and shooting scenery or buildings, I end up with a much higher keeper rate.

The first thing I do when I import into Lightroom is walk through each photo and if it is obviously bad, I delete it.

Hello Bill, Keep Shooting, the more you take, the better opportunity to create that keeper, that you will be proud of creating. As for your Snake Photo, I do like it, although I too find the tree a definite distraction, a thought would be to take quick consecutive images, before the Tree and after the Tree, then pick from those images. You might end up with 20-30 or more shots, and find maybe 1-2 keepers, but with Digital Photography, there is no extra cost.
Remember to re-format your Media card in your Camera, after you have moved your photos to your Computer, before you do another Photo shoot.

Youare justtoo picky. And too critical of yourself. I bet others seeing your photos would love at least half of them. I've had photos of mine that I really didn't like, yet some friends loved them. It all depends where you are coming from. Loosen up!
I'm not talking about blurry or technically flawed pics. Forgot to mention, I like your candid snake shot!

Ernest, you really think it's a "very good picture"? In my opinion that tree to the left is very distracting and substantially degrades the image's impact. But that's just me.

Welcome to the Hog Bill.
I see you have lots of good replies to your question.
I'm jus a student of photography, so what do I know. I could spend two days deleting photos, and should.

This was the best picture out of 15 shots. The area I shot this was so thick with a lot of bushes and undergrowth and the dam snake just wouldn't sit still long enough for me to get a good shot, he was clipping along at a pretty good speed before he disappeared into the bushes. I should have had my camera set on continues shot, but he caught me by surprise. If I would have taken my eyes off him I would have lost him.

Welcome, Bill. I think you're typical for most photographers in this digital age. the extra shots don't cost us anything so what's the harm. There are purists on this forum who will tell you to take your time and compose each shot as if you were working with film. They have a point in that we all could benefit from thinking through what we're trying to achieve vs the spray and pray approach. When I'm shooting animals or anything fast moving I set the shutter to take rapid bursts and blast away hoping to catch just the right expression on the animal's face or just the right tilt of the head on a bird etc. It's nice to have the ability to shoot lots of pictures. You can always delete.

Absolutely! You are only limited by how much you are willing to spend.
