I suggest a used or refurbished Nikon 18-55 VR, Nikon 18-105 VR, or Nikon 18-140 VR. Try keh.com, B&H, and Adorama for a new, used, or refurbished one.

I have the opertunity to purchase a really clean used D7200 body for a really good price. It's just the body, no lenses. I own no lenses that will fit a Nikon body. I'm looking for advice on lenses. I don't have a lot of available funds in my "for photography" account at the moment, so I can't just go out and buy what I think would be the right lenses. I'm soliciting suggestions on what lenses to get on a budget that will compliment the camera and not anger the wife anymore than she is. Her exact words when I told her about the D7200, "what do you need another camera for, didn't you just get that new one a couple weeks ago?"
If it wasn't for the distinct red stripe I could have gotten away with not telling her. When she borrows one I always ask her, which one and her response is, the black one you showed me how to use.

That's a very good camera, and you can't go wrong with a Nikon lens. A zoom would be more practical, and used or refurbished would save you money. Do some comparisons.

I have one of those. It is indeed a very good lens. It is true that the plastic body feels cheap, but what great optics.

The body is magnesium alloy not plastic; see the following: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-d7200

I have a D7100; very rugged, dependable and flexible as I am confident that your 7200 will be. You should be able to find the following 2 kit lenses on Ebay, at a camera store or keep watch on this site. A 18-55 and 55-200 are two that are opften sold in the $100 area and are excellent leses

Nikon_jon was talking about the lens, not the camera.

Try this. I have one & is great. $289.00 free shipping. I'm looking for advice on lenses. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Tamron-AF-18-270mm-VC-PZD-Di-II-Zoom-Lens-For-Nikon-DSLR-Cameras-B008N-/121882450988?hash=item1c60c29c2c:g:N1IAAOxymiVQ~W-9I don't have a lot of available funds in my "for photography" account at the moment, so I can't just go out and buy what I think would be the right lenses. My suggestion is based on money being an issue. I was kind of in the same situation after I bought a used dslr to utilize my older manual focus Nikon lenses. I decided to find a general purpose, affordable (price was a big factor), but good auto focus lens. It soon boiled down to an 18-55 f3.5-5.6 DX or the older 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 G IF DX. After comparing the two, I went for the 18-70 for two reasons: It has a more practical focal length range (35mm equiv of 28-105) and the clincher for me, it is a better build quality. It isn't the cheap consumer plastic mount design of the 18-55, it is the higher quality metal design of the higher end lenses. Originally the 18-70 went for over $300. You can find a good one for about or just over $100 today. Either of these lenses are very good optically. I've been more then happy with mine and it's still the only auto focus lens I own

Nikon 18-140MM f3.5-5.6 can be found refurbished for around $300.00. It can be found on my D7100 90% of the time except when I use my 50MM f1.8.

I have a D7100 & the D7200 is the replacement for my model. I own about 85 different AF & MF lenses that will fit it & that I can use. Since it has a motor in the body, older AF lenses will work just fine. MF Nikon F mount lenses will mount & meter ( in either M or A modes) as well (no adapters needed). Getting FX lenses is a good idea as the camera uses the center of them (where their "sweet spot" is, and where they are the sharpest). I , like many on UHH grew up with manual focus lenses, thus using them isn't an issue for me. I have AF lenses as well for those times where that feature is preferred. I mention MF lenses as you can get "Pro" quality optics for a fraction on the price of their new AF counterparts...

35 mm 1.8G DX, very sharp, small, not expensive.

Every DX shooter should have the 35mm DX lens.

I like my Sigma 18-300. That's a good all purpose lens and you might be able to get one used or refurb at a good price.
What brand lenses do you own? Perhaps you can get an adapter to fit the Nikon. If you have any Sigma lenses I think they can change the mount.

With it's long registration distance, there are few lenses that can be used on Nikon DSLR's with adapters. Most require adapters with an additional element (questionable optical quality) in order to maintain infinity focus. There are simple mechanical adapters, but you then lose infinity focus. Actually (depending on the focal length of the lens being used) you will be lucky to focus out to a few meters. Better to find & use lenses with Nikon's F mount. There are plenty out there. Many Canon users seek out the older Nikon MF lenses to use for video purposes, thus jacking up prices for them. A for the "kit" lenses, I don't care for them. Optically they are not bad, but they all have polycarbonate mounts & a slight knock on the side of a lens can easily break off a flange on them, making mounting a no go..

I have the D7200, and love it. I strongly recommend the Nikon 16-80 mm, f2.8-4 DX VR lens, it stays on my camera 95% of the tiime.
