It's best to download these two.

No. 2 by a mile IMHO, Brent! To my eyes, this looks like a scene from a sci-fi movie, with a miniaturized doctor repairing someone's damaged spinal column. Weird!

So, I'm on the other side once again. No. 1 for me precisely because the climber and route are isolated, nothing else matters. The vague images around climber and route add nothing except "noise" to the event. I'd hang No. 1 and put No. 2 in the back of the closet. For me, No. 1 has impact, No. 2 nada.

Brent,

Definitely #2 for me as well. It has more detail and spark to it for me. With more in the surrounding area, I get a better feel for what is actually happening. Nice going, Brent.

Morning Brent, Just my two cents. I believe all focus should be on the climber. To me the pp chosen takes away. The second "spreads" the eye rather than drawing in. The first I believe is just wrong chose of color. The white doesn't work for me. Maybe try a touch of vignette, light to medium amount, but black. You know I always enjoy your work. Sandy

Well neilds37, that's what makes the world go around! I'm glad you have your opinion and it is different than most everyone elses. Don't worry about being on the "other side". Many times the most brilliant people are on the "other side"!

Thanks Tom for your opinion and also the in depth description of why you felt that way.

Sandy, it's ok that you don't like it the ways I have presented it here. Thanks for your opinion. I used the same image to create another version of this climber that you may like more. It doesn't have any white vignette.

I'm going with No. 2. The climber is more in his element that the somewhat isolated depiction in No. 1.

#2 - I believe the contrast between the image and the stark white used as a portion of the background is too much.

Thanks Bob for sharing your thoughts on these two photos. Most everyone agrees with you! I think the fact that almost everyone feels this way seems to be swaying me in that direction too!

Both are good, but I think I prefer #1 slightly more. The black frame line looks a bit out of place and unnecessary in #2, but fits perfectly with #1, as it effectively breaks up the empty white space while simultaneously drawing the viewer inward towards the climber in the center.
