fstoprookie, you might want to examine the software Affinity, it's similar to Photoshop without the subscription and the high price...I believe it's $49.95 at this point if time.

Are the extra importing steps to bring NEFs in as DNGs really that onerous? Adobe is the Gold standard for image processing, Macintosh the favored platform and Lightroom is designed from the ground up for amateur and professional photographers.

Plus, as Dngallagher says, for $10/month, its a steal.

I don't know. $10 a month is $120 a year, year after year after year after....

Plus if you look at the subject titles in "Main Photography Discussion" you will see an inordinate number of them are about problems with Lightroom, Photoshop and/or Creative Cloud. If Adobe products really were so wonderful, there wouldn't be so many people having so much problem with them.

I am an Apple guy that has a D5. First, I HATE using a DNG converter. It's clunky and adds a couple of extra steps that take up valuable time. I've been using LR5.7 for some time now(it doesn't support my new camera). I stopped using Aperture when APPLE abandon it. Now I have a choice, I can pay ADOBE $10/month for ever (I don't use Photoshop and not very often PSE 14, is it really worth it?) or I can purchase LR6 for $80 (haven't heard very positive feedback), or I can move to a new program with similar capabilities as LR. Hopefully, not to be abandon. I would really like to find something similar to LR &/or Aperture. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Why not just use NX-D.

Adobe products are wonderful. But, the more a program can do, the longer/steeper the learning curve. Many of the "problems" arise because people are too lazy to read a manual or watch the tutorials.

The real issue IMHO is that too many people are convinced they need it because "everybody" on the internet tells them so. Then instead of doing there own research they ask everything from how do I load the program to what color should the red light on my Christmas tree be?

It is not "needed" by anybody, and not useful to many. But, for those who really want to control their post processing, instead of having it done by clicking a preset, PhotoShop is the cat's meow. LightRoom doesn't ring my chimes.

When I was a kid, my sister and I would come home with "problems". Our father's routine approach was to say, "Let's look at that. Everything is 'relative'".

A six pack of beer every month, year after year will add up too!

If the business journals are right that 6 million use the rental plan and 100 UHH members have an inordinate number of problems, that is a 0.0017 percent problem.

It is never good when someone has a computer problem. People that do have Adobe issues find there way to a few primary forums. That can create the perception that it is more than it really is.

I might agree with your sentiments but I cannot agree with your math, there are not 6 million uglyhedgehog users let alone 6 million ugly hedgehog users that use lightroom.

I am not sure why the aversion to the adobe raw converter, with lightroom 5.7 you can copy as dng supported files. provided you are using the raw converter in batch mode this shouldn't take much longer than converting and adding to lightroom directly.

Most if not all the open source editors use DCRaw as a preprocessor DCRaw handles the file conversion from a nef or cr2 or... opening the initial file and spitting out a 16 bit image in tiff format for the actual editor to work on. On the Mac it may be possible to automate it a bit better than the way adobe have left it. I wonder if it is possible to use adobe raw converter as an external editor for lightroom or alternatively have the raw converter automatically pass the dng files into lightroom.

I will take a look and see if its possible to smooth the conversion.

This may be useful

oh it is all so confusing to me...i use Aperture 3 still and it suits most of my needs ..i use photoshop elements for text and a few other perks...however i just recently purchased Affinity and it does have a bit of a learning curve to it but i didn't find it to be especially outstanding .has similar features to photoshop but it is used a bit differently ..for only 50 bucks it is worth the try..now for the big question. What's wrong with the lightroom 6 DVD...I recently purchased it but haven't put it on my computer yet..i refuse to pay the 10 dollars a month for a rental fee which will add up over the years for something that i probably won't have as much use for...most of what i do to edit is already in the programs i have...as for Photos ..that is a total disaster..seems that Apple is going backwards instead of forward on that one..i wish i could remove it totally from my computer
i know everyone is raving about the lightroom rental but what if eventually you just can't afford it anymore ..having the disc to me is just more practical..

Look for a / the stand alone ACR, free. I use it if need be with PSE 9 on my Wife's PC, I use Ps CS6 w/ACR 9.1.1 on my PC.

What's wrong with your Nikon provided software for conversion? to DNG or TIF.

I cannot understand why some will spend thousands for cameras and related equipment but balk at paying $10.00/month for absolutely the very best and constantly updated PP from Adobe. About the price of two cups of Starbucks coffee/month.
The vast majority of people who use these programs have no problems whatsoever, and they don't write in periodically to report the fact that they are having no problems. Some do have problems because that they simply wade into the program without making an effort to learn the basics first.

Adobe Photoshop CC which comes with Lightroom and of course Bridge CC. At $10 per month for a license rental fee, this deal one cannot beat with a stick. PCC only becomes better with time.

Here are some alternates. Where did you see LR for $80? I've seen it for $150.

Because down under the price has already been increased... it is not just $10 then but rather an increasing amount... increasing to what ever adobe deems right to them... and then if you dont like it or think that it is too much, well, you may not be able to convert your images to something else. right now, you can use capture 1 and it will import your lightroom files... I have not used it yet, but when I get my next D8xx i will have to go to something different... I dont rent, it is that simple.
