I am an Apple guy that has a D5. First, I HATE using a DNG converter. It's clunky and adds a couple of extra steps that take up valuable time. I've been using LR5.7 for some time now(it doesn't support my new camera). I stopped using Aperture when APPLE abandon it. Now I have a choice, I can pay ADOBE $10/month for ever (I don't use Photoshop and not very often PSE 14, is it really worth it?) or I can purchase LR6 for $80 (haven't heard very positive feedback), or I can move to a new program with similar capabilities as LR. Hopefully, not to be abandon. I would really like to find something similar to LR &/or Aperture. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Zoner Photo Studio - handles NEFs from D4s, not sure on D5. You can try it for 30 days.

Thanks Bill for the suggestion - I'll check it out

Other than "mobile" features and the Haze filter the $10 per month plan and the $80 version are the same. According to business journals, I'm one in a group upwards of 6 million are on the rental plan. We apparently have not heard the bad feedback!
What have you heard that was bad?
That said, I think the big three are Lightroom, DxO and Capture One. I enjoy Lightroom a lot and know nothing about the other two.
I just checked and confirmed that the NIK collection, which is now totally free, can be added as a plug-in to Zoner.

go for the $10.00 per month. you may evidentially want to learn a few simple things in photoshop that you cannot do in lightroom. there are many you tube videos to teach you.

IMHO - The $10.00 a month subscription plan is hard to beat, updates AND upgrades.... Bridge, Lightroom AND Photoshop as long as you maintain the subscription... personally, 10.00 a month is easier to take than 80.00 for Lightroom alone... :)
BTW - I was also an Aperture user and switched to the CC plan as soon as Apple announced dropping Aperture.
In over 2 years of the CC plan, I have learned quite a bit with Photoshop, so much so that I would be hard pressed to limp along without it now. ;)
I can also say, NOTHING bad about the CC plan at all... nope, its all good as far as I am concerned.

Adobe Photoshop CC which comes with Lightroom and of course Bridge CC. At $10 per month for a license rental fee, this deal one cannot beat with a stick. PCC only becomes better with time.

fstoprookie, you might want to examine the software Affinity, it's similar to Photoshop without the subscription and the high price...I believe it's $49.95 at this point if time.

@fstop, while eventually you will likely need to upgrade to something newer, you might want to see if upgrading the OSX you have, as on the Mac the OS includes the raw converter. So for now perhaps upgrading your OSX is a short term solution

First of all Apple didn't abandon Aperture 3. It's still there and you can still use it
2nd, if you have not used Photos give it a try. It's not as good as Aperture, but it is functional and you won't come down with the Zika virus if you use it.
3rd, your choices are not limited to Adobe products. If you take some time to do some research you will find a multitude of PP programs.
4th, Affinity Photo has developed a powerful program for MAC computers that can be used as a stand alone or in conjunction with Photos with Affinity tools available as extensions in Photos.
Are the extra importing steps to bring NEFs in as DNGs really that onerous? Adobe is the Gold standard for image processing, Macintosh the favored platform and Lightroom is designed from the ground up for amateur and professional photographers.
Plus, as Dngallagher says, for $10/month, its a steal.
I would stick with the CC $10/month plan. I have it on my Mac and my PC, for the one price subscription. Saving photos to the CC Cloud I can go back forth between either operating system when I need to use on or the other.
I have my computers set up in different rooms to avoid neighbors noise and sunlight. LOL
