Retired a couple years ago and wife just did the same this last year. We bought ourselves a new Cougar Travel Trailer and are headed out in a couple days for it's 'Maiden Voyage'.
My camera gear isn't the most expensive but I am quiet happy with it although I will add some new lens in the future.
I consider myself lucky to have my girl of my dreams and good health for both of us to enjoy this new phase of our lives together after 43 years.

I envy you!! However, our last kid (27) left the next for the second time last week. We have the place to ourselves. It's quiet. His tv isn't blaring until the early morning hours (nice to be young), so I'm sleeping better.

You'll have to post some photos from the road once you take the Gilligan tour.

The perfect Gilligan tour would be just me and Mary Ann. You can have the other one. Was it Ginger? She was too high dollar. Still can't figure out how the professor could make a radio out of coconuts but couldn't fix a hole in a boat.

Probably got it from Gilligan. He had the same issue a few years back. Did they grow it on the island? She's OK with me as long she didn't inhale. Like Bill Clinton you know.

I hope that is a dream list. You never know what your future holds but have fun taking pictures with the equipment you do buy.

SteveR...Your Nikon list is very solid. You can do almost anything you want there...and with a pair of strobes...with a couple of homemade light modifiers you could make some very fine portraits...take a look at Dean Collins, he performed miracles with just two lights... and with lenses from 14 to 500 mm...hey...you own the world.
Good Luck and Great Captures

Excellent choice since 10-grand would just be a down payment on a bass boat. :) Good luck!!

OK, Steve, you have 5 pages of replies...all good thoughts. Before I make any suggestions let me relate the story of my retirement.
I retired in July, 2010. NYC Public Schools. Between unused sick days, money that couldn't be rolled over and income tax refunds, I had some money in the bank. My '96 Jeep Cherokee was aging and the newer car, 2002 Subaru, already had about 110k on it. My wife is still teaching in NYC so we thought a new car was in line. So, I bought a 2011 Subaru Legacy. (She still doesn't drive it...another story.) Put as much down with my AAdvantage debit/credit card so I could get the air miles, and the rest with a check up to a total of $17K. October I got my first installment of sick days money and paid the car off. Didn't want to start retirement with a car payment.
That August, we went on an Alaska cruise with my Canon SD1400 P&S. That's when I realized I needed a better camera, so I bought the D5100. It's a highly rated entry-level DSLR. Hadn't used my N6006 in years.

Now comes my opinion of your list.
D800???? I dunno, that $3K could be put towards better glass for your existing D7000.
The philosophy of this forum is that it's not the camera, it's the eyeball behind the viewfinder. (I changed it around a bit.)
Will the D800 make you a better photographer?
As far as glass goes, someone else noticed the absence of prime lenses but I think you said you already had the nifty 50 1.8.
I like your choices for the other lenses so that's where I'd put the $$$$. Maybe go for a 50mm 1.2 & sell the 1.8.
I believe you mentioned a road trip in a trailer. Before you do anything like that, rent the movie "Road Trip" with Robin Williams. I know it's a comedy, but there may be some truth to the exaggerations in the film.
I'd love to take a road trip across the US. Motel here, a motel there, and day trips to all the great spots.
Someone mentioned Alaska...as I said, we took a cruise there last summer...outstanding. You'd have to be a 3 year old to take a bad picture there. The same with our New England/Canada cruise the year before.

Well, that's my 2₵. You seem to have some pretty good equipment but are short a few lenses.

Oh, the boat. I DO like fishing but I live in a community with water on 3 sides, and fishing from the docks is pretty poor. I keep threatening to buy a used boat every year for the past 6 years we've been here but every year for the past 6 years, my wife keeps telling me we need something like, getting the floors done, new furniture, painting, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Good thing you don't like fishing. BTW, can you get a new bass boat for $10K?

Well, good luck on your retirement...whenever it may be.

Indi...Thanks for your feet on terra ferma, practical approach to the retirement question. I posted this thread as an exercise in fantasy, a "what you buy instead of a bass boat?" My list is a dream list. In all likelihood it will never happen. I might be lucky to get one of those lenses. It was also meant to stimulate conversation. You mentioned prime lenses. I am amazed at the low light capability of the 1.8. If I ever find that the 1.8 and the ISO capabilities of the newer DSLRs isn't sufficient that may be an option. What other primes would you suggest? As good as the 70-200mm is, I don't know if there could be much improvement by using primes. The D800 is on order, however. I had been collecting Presidential Dollars. 2 rolls for each President. Now that series is being discontinued....so, I've got about 1K towards the camera, plus the promise of $600 for my D7000. The D800 has the same sensor as the D7000, but full frame. It's a great price for a full frame camera. Good luck and have a great retirement!!

I just did exactly that.

D800 body. I already have plenty of lenses and SB800's

That was my only purchased new addition. Oops, I forgot the Canon Pro 1 printer and Epson V700.

Everything else used, but in great condition.

A lot of great deals out there in used MF and LF.

Building my dream darkroom, portrait studio and large format camera collection.

Sinar C 8x10
Horseman LX 4x5

10 large format lenses. I don't need that many but they came with the cameras.

Now I need to learn how to shoot...
