My 13 year old granddaughter left this morning for a school sponsored trip to Washington, DC. She enjoys photography and is pretty good. I have loaned her my cameras whenever she is interested or has a project. Her skills with her iPhone always impress me.
For this trip I offered to loan her my Panasonic GX7 with a 14-140 lens or a Sony RX100i. She took both home for a day and gave the "big" camera back. The Sony has a big enough sensor and good enough lens to get the job done, she has less weight to carry, it is less bulky and won't stand out in a crowd.
She intends to shoot both photos and video. She has the skills to edit both.
For the fun of it, I want to text her a short "Shooting Tip" each morning. This morning it was "When in doubt, shoot it again from an different perspective".
What photo tips would you send your charming, brilliant and gorgeous granddaughter?
Thanks.

Thank you! I'm not worried about the "have fun". In fact, she may have so much of it, that she won't really get a lot of photography done!
"get closer" may well be tomorrow's tip. Like many of us, she uses zoom and post process cropping too much.
I like "get low" a lot. I don't think I'll suggest "get high".

I understand, that's why I specified "shots". If she wasn't on a school trip I might be able to come up with some suggestions, Bob.
The most emotional site she will visit is The Wall. I would challenge her to get some photos that depict that emotion. Perhaps catching some candid shots of her classmates -- instead of happy-go-lucky, being subdued and showing respect.

She is a respectful kid, knows about The Wall and that I'm a Vietnam vet. Another post today has a dramatic sunrise shot of The Wall. I've thought of sending it to her as a challenge.
She has a very active Instagram following and is without doubt good at candids of her buddies!
If being able to "nail" the National Anthem has anything to do with "respect" you might enjoy watching her sing it solo at a basketball game. She confessed to watching Lady Gaga do it at the SuperBowl as part of her preparation. Lady Gaga needed a piano! My granddaughter did not!

That was SO COOL! You must be bursting with pride.
My granddaughter Peyton is 10 and hopefully she will be just like your Sara at 13.
One thing I can tell you being as I live not too far from DC -- she is having very good, sunny weather the last two days. A bit breezy though. Going to be great tomorrow also.

I've been bursting since she and her sister were born. They are proof that the crap about today's kids being disaster cases is wrong.
Since you enjoyed her singing, how about watching her learning portrait photography last year? She had a buddy that wanted to "model". She asked to borrow my camera. I asked if I could video the project. For the sake of a chuckle, keep in mind that I'm an old man in an alley with two very young and pretty girls who thought it was a good location.

That was a fun watch. Good kids are great!
How did they happen upon that alley for a setting?

It is between restaurants in Puyallup, WA. The alley opens to a popular city park in the center of town.

You don't say how long she will be in town, but the Cherry Blossom kite festival is this coming Saturday (April 2).

She will be there only a few days. I was thinking of sending tomorrow's tip to suggest she look for patches of color that are moving against a background and press the video button.
Slow the shutter down and pan so that the subject is sharp and the background is blurred.

That's good! I'll send it to her. Thanks.
