You must be the "cool" grandpa. And she sounds not only talented but smart too. Great choice on the camera. Tip: Its all about the light. Find it.

Tell her to go to some of the monuments after dark and they are illuminated. Lincoln, Jefferson come to mind.

By the look of your avatar, the mission they gave me was pretty tame!

I texted you suggestion to her! And, yes, she is smart. She is in all the advanced classes, gets wonderful grades and is involved in school leadership. It is hard to believe she is genetically connected to me.

I texted your suggestion with the reminder that the camera she borrowed has some good low light automation for handheld shooting.

My 13 year old granddaughter left this morning for a school sponsored trip to Washington, DC. She enjoys photography and is pretty good. I have loaned her my cameras whenever she is interested or has a project. Her skills with her iPhone always impress me.

For this trip I offered to loan her my Panasonic GX7 with a 14-140 lens or a Sony RX100i. She took both home for a day and gave the "big" camera back. The Sony has a big enough sensor and good enough lens to get the job done, she has less weight to carry, it is less bulky and won't stand out in a crowd.

She intends to shoot both photos and video. She has the skills to edit both.

For the fun of it, I want to text her a short "Shooting Tip" each morning. This morning it was "When in doubt, shoot it again from an different perspective".

What photo tips would you send your charming, brilliant and gorgeous granddaughter?

Thanks.

According to Joel Sartore, a premier National Geographic photographer, the best times to take photos will be in the early morning or late in the day.
Also, if she wants people in her photos, do very little posing. Take most photos of people acting naturally.

Thank you. I will include your tip in tomorrows morning update. I'm not sure how a 13 year old young woman can avoid posing in a crowd of her 70 school buddies! Did you know there was an iPhone app that records what you have in your closet so that you can mix and match your wardrobe components before the morning dress up?

Do very little posing as in portrait-style. The best photos are capturing her school buddies while they're talking among themselves or pointing at something or being active in some manner or...the list is endless (it's as if her buddies cannot even see her taking the photos). Portrait posing is best for having some landmark in the background, which she shouldn't have a problem finding.

You are right. I'm not sure my texts to her really penetrate the social fog in a herd of 13 year olds! That said, she has been a good photographer for a few years and I'm looking forward to seeing her results. Like all of us, she has a learning rate. Her specific advantage came in two parts. First, of course, she has had me (grin!) to supply software and gear. Second, she is part of the iPhone generation and always has a camera with her. As often as I suggest and loan better gear she shows me results that I can't argue with.

Not sure if anyone has suggesting bracketing her exposures. I found that many of the Mall Memorials are very reflective, so angles and f-stops can make a real difference.

We talked about bracketing before she left. We also talked about the latitude inherent in RAW. She is shooting RAW+JPEG. I don't know if the bracketing will be successful.

She came home with only a few photos! It turned out that "all" of the 40 kids on the trip had "huge" Nikons or Canons. It was too embarrassing to pull out a Sony RX100!
