The other day I edited a lot of B&W photos and then copied them to a thumb drive. I forgot to empty my pockets when I threw my pants into the washing machine. To my horror I discovered the thumb drive in the washer, it had been through wash cycle, rinse cycle, and spin cycle. I put the thumb drive in my pocket and when I was at Wal-mart, I decided to see if the photos survived the washer and to my surprise the photos were in tact.

Good thing you didn't use too much bleach.

I dont think a normal thumb drive would survive the dryer.

I just had one survive both. Nothing special either: it was a give away from a trade show.

Been there done that. I did my laundry and when emptying the drier I found my 4G SanDisk Cruiser thumb drive. I figured it was toast. I let it sit a day or two to ensure that it had ample time to dry out, may not have been required as it had been through the dryer already. Then I plucked up the courage to plug it into the computer. To my surprise it was accessible and the full directory and folders were there. I opened some of the files and was pleasantly surprised to find it appeared to be operating normally. That was a few years ago now and the drive is still in service today.

Read my first response, washed and dried. Still working years later.

Solid state circuits you hear about cameras bring found underwater all the time and the photos are recovered.
I don't know if I would use that card for important photos again.
