The other day I edited a lot of B&W photos and then copied them to a thumb drive. I forgot to empty my pockets when I threw my pants into the washing machine. To my horror I discovered the thumb drive in the washer, it had been through wash cycle, rinse cycle, and spin cycle. I put the thumb drive in my pocket and when I was at Wal-mart, I decided to see if the photos survived the washer and to my surprise the photos were in tact.

I've accidentally laundered thumb drives and SD cards with no ill effect. Apparently they are fairly water resistant.

There was this pretty woman from Arizona who murdered her husband. They were caught up in strange sexual rituals. She removed the SD and put it in the washing machine to destroy evidence. The police found it in the wash.. Presto, evidence. She was convicted of murder. Never underestimate the durability of electrical devices. A digital camera would not have survived this washing act.

Yes, the last time one of my CF cards went through the whole wash cycle I too was surprised it survived. Good to know it's pretty routine though.
I thought it had only survived because it had been protected by the camera!!!

Most memories are resilient. Pretty sure what really damages them are the HEAT, magnetic and radiation exposure.
I dont think a normal thumb drive would survive the dryer.

Does it wash out all the artifacts in the shots?

Your thumb drive is pretty much a Sarcophagus. It is sealed against the world until opened.

Yeah, and SD cards are just as durable. Some are advertised as being waterproof, but it's hardly necessary to say that. Don't try that with a traditional hard drive, though.

No. Despite the limits of human nature, I strive mightily to avoid doing dumb stuff.

Lost one near my driveway once......in the winter. Found it in the spring. It even a a little bit of rust color on it. I cleaned it up and everything on it was intact..

Not to me but Jodi Arrias tried to wash away photos by laundering them. They helped convict her.
